Alabama-Style Sweet Pecan Bread

Some recipes feel timeless—passed from one generation to the next, scribbled on worn recipe cards, and brought out for family dinners, holidays, and community gatherings. Sweet Alabama Pecanbread is one of those treasures. A true Southern classic, it embodies warmth, hospitality, and the comforting ease of homemade baking.

The first time I tasted it was at a church potluck years ago. The tables overflowed with casseroles and desserts, but those golden squares studded with pecans immediately caught my eye. One bite was all it took—rich, buttery, gently sweet, nutty, and perfectly chewy at the edges. It felt less like a dessert and more like a hug in dessert form.

What makes this pecanbread so special is its unique texture. It isn’t exactly a cake, but it isn’t a cookie either—it lands beautifully in between. Think of a blondie with a Southern spirit: toasted pecans for crunch, brown sugar and butter for warm caramel depth, and a chewy bite that makes it nearly impossible to stop at just one piece.

Another reason it’s so loved? It’s incredibly simple to make. No fancy equipment, no complicated steps—just a bowl, a whisk, and a baking dish. If you’re looking for a dessert that never disappoints, this pecanbread deserves a permanent place in your recipe lineup.

Chopped pecans 1 cup Crunch & richness
All-purpose flour 1 cup Structure
Large eggs 2 Binding
Vegetable oil or melted butter ½ cup Moisture
Vanilla extract 2 tsp Flavor
Salt ½ tsp Balances sweetness

  1. Preheat: Set your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×13-inch baking pan or line it with parchment paper.
  2. Combine wet ingredients: Whisk the eggs, oil (or butter), and vanilla until smooth.
  3. Add sugars: Mix in both sugars until fully blended.
  4. Incorporate dry ingredients: Gently stir in the flour, baking powder, and salt—mix only until just combined.
  5. Fold in pecans: Add the chopped pecans and stir lightly.
  6. Bake: Pour the batter into the prepared pan and bake for 35–40 minutes, or until golden and a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  7. Cool & slice: Let it cool before cutting into bars or squares.
