Making your own gift bags is a budget-friendly and eco-friendly way to add a personal touch to your presents. You can easily transform materials you already have, like wrapping paper or fabric scraps, into professional-looking bags.
Method 1: Using Wrapping Paper (The “Paper Bag Hack”)
This method is perfect for oddly shaped items that are hard to wrap traditionally.
- Supplies:Â Wrapping paper, scissors, tape, a hole punch, and ribbon.
- Step 1: Measure & Cut. Roll out enough paper to cover the item. Cut the paper so the sides overlap by a few inches when folded toward the center.
- Step 2: Create a Tube. Fold the left and right sides toward the middle so they overlap. Secure the entire length of the seam with tape.
- Step 3: Form the Base. Fold the bottom edge up (about 1/4 of the way). Open the fold and flatten the corners inward to create a diamond shape.
- Step 4: Seal the Bottom. Fold the top and bottom points of the diamond toward the center and tape them securely.
- Step 5: Finishing Touches. Open the bag, place your gift inside, and fold the top down. Punch two holes at the top and thread a ribbon through to create handles.
Method 2: Easy Fabric Gift Bags
Fabric bags are reusable and great for eco-friendly gifting.
- Supplies:Â Two pieces of cotton fabric (outer and lining), ribbon, and a sewing machine or needle/thread.
- Simple Drawstring Version:
- Fold a rectangular piece of fabric in half with right sides together.
- Sew the side and bottom edges, leaving the top open.
- Fold the top edge down to create a “casing” (a tunnel for the ribbon) and sew around it, leaving a small gap.
- Thread your ribbon through the casing and tie it off.
