This hearty, comforting breakfast casserole can be assembled the evening before. It features layers of hash browns, ham, and cheese, all baked together in a savory, custardy egg mixture.

Farmer’s-Style Casserole

Ingredients

INGREDIENTS AMOUNT
Frozen shredded hash browns 6 cups
Grated Monterey Jack cheese 2 cups
Diced ham 2 cups
Chopped green onions 1/2 cup
Large eggs, beaten 8
Evaporated milk Two 12-oz cans
Garlic salt 1/2 teaspoon
Black pepper 1/4 teaspoon

How to Make Farmer’s-Style Casserole

Step 1: Preheat the Oven
When it’s time to bake, set your oven to 350°F (175°C).

Step 2: Layer the Ingredients
Spread the 6 cups of frozen hash browns evenly in a 9×13-inch baking dish. Add 2 cups of grated Monterey Jack cheese, followed by 2 cups of diced ham and 1/2 cup chopped green onions.

Step 3: Prepare the Egg Mixture
In a bowl, whisk together the 8 beaten eggs, both cans of evaporated milk, 1/2 teaspoon garlic salt, and 1/4 teaspoon pepper. Pour this mixture evenly over the layers in the dish.

Step 4: Bake
You may cover and refrigerate the dish overnight for an easy make-ahead option.

  • If baking right away: Cook uncovered for around 1 hour and 15 minutes, or until the center is set.
  • If baking after chilling: Bake uncovered for roughly 1 hour and 30 minutes, or until the casserole is firm throughout.
