For a second, the entire backyard seemed to go silent.

PART 2 For a second, the entire backyard seemed to go silent.

For a second, the entire backyard seemed to go silent.

The laughter disappeared.

The splashing in the pool stopped.

Even the children froze when they heard me yell.

Clara looked down at herself, confused.

“What are you screaming about?” she snapped.

I couldn’t answer immediately.

I was staring at the tiny waterproof temporary tattoo stuck just above the waistband of her swimsuit.

It wasn’t just any tattoo.

It was a cartoon astronaut.

A smiling astronaut holding a blue balloon.

Exactly the same astronaut Glen had been wearing on the inside of his wrist only three nights earlier.

My stomach dropped.

Ariel wasn’t pointing at Clara’s stomach.

She was pointing at the astronaut.

“Daddy’s in there.”

To her three-year-old mind, the astronaut was Daddy.

Because Glen had spent the entire week letting Ariel color matching temporary tattoos together after buying a family pack at a local store.

She had proudly called Glen “Astronaut Daddy.”

The nickname had stuck.

Only…

There had been one problem.

There had only been TWO astronaut tattoos left.

One was on Glen’s wrist.

The other had mysteriously disappeared before Ariel could use it.

I remembered Glen telling us that maybe it had fallen out of the package.

Now…

It was sitting on Clara’s stomach.

I slowly looked at Glen.

His smile vanished.

His face lost every bit of color.

“Why…” I whispered.

“Why are you wearing the same tattoo?”

Clara glanced down and laughed.

“Oh, this?”

She rubbed it casually.

“It must have gotten stuck to me somehow.”

Somehow?

Temporary tattoos don’t magically attach themselves to someone’s skin.

“You expect me to believe that?” I asked quietly.

Glen walked over much faster than I expected.

“It’s just a tattoo,” he said.

“You’re overreacting.”

I stared at him.

“No.”

“I’m reacting exactly the right amount.”

A strange feeling settled into my chest.

Not panic.

Not anger.

Something colder.

Logic.

Because suddenly dozens of little memories started fitting together.

The unexplained late meetings.

The sudden interest Glen had developed in helping my father repair things around his house.

The weekends he volunteered to mow their lawn.

The expensive perfume I’d smelled on one of his hoodies.

The way Clara always disappeared into the kitchen whenever Glen visited.

At the time…

I’d never connected any of it.

Now every memory came rushing back like puzzle pieces clicking into place.

I forced myself to smile.

“You’re right,” I said.

“It’s only a tattoo.”

Clara smirked triumphantly.

“I knew you’d come to your senses.”

I nodded.

Then I picked Ariel up.

“Sweetheart, let’s go wash your hands before cake.”

As we walked inside, Ariel wrapped her tiny arms around my neck.

She whispered something that made me stop in the hallway.

“Mommy…”

“They hug when Grandpa sleeps.”

I slowly turned toward her.

“What?”

She looked completely innocent.

“I saw them.”

“When?”

“Grandpa was taking a nap.”

“Daddy went upstairs.”

“Grandma Clara kissed him.”

My heartbeat became painfully loud.

Children don’t invent details like that.

Not at three years old.

Especially not completely unprompted.

I knelt in front of her.

“When did you see that?”

She held up three fingers.

“Three sleeps ago.”

Three days.

Three days ago Glen had told me he needed to help my father fix the air conditioner.

He hadn’t come home until nearly eleven that night.

I felt sick.

Still…

I refused to accuse anyone based only on the words of a toddler.

Children misunderstand things.

They imagine stories.

I needed facts.

Real facts.

So I walked back outside with the biggest smile I could manage.

“Cake time!” I announced.

Everyone gathered around.

Pictures were taken.

Candles were lit.

Parents laughed.

Children sang.

Meanwhile I watched Glen and Clara.

Neither one looked comfortable anymore.

Every few minutes they accidentally glanced at each other.

Not once.

Not twice.

Constantly.

Like two people checking whether the other was about to say something.

That alone told me more than words ever could.

After everyone left that evening, Clara hugged my father goodbye.

She wouldn’t look me in the eyes.

Glen immediately volunteered to help clean the backyard.

Normally he’d complain.

Tonight he insisted.

Another clue.

Around nine o’clock, after Ariel had fallen asleep upstairs, I quietly walked into our bedroom.

“Glen.”

He looked up from folding towels.

“What?”

“I have a question.”

“Sure.”

“How did Clara get that astronaut tattoo?”

He didn’t answer immediately.

Instead he laughed.

“You’ve seriously been thinking about that all day?”

“Answer me.”

“I don’t know.”

“It probably stuck to her from Ariel.”

“No.”

“Ariel never wore that one.”

His jaw tightened.

“You really think I’m having an affair with your stepmother?”

He actually sounded offended.

The performance would have convinced me yesterday.

Not tonight.

“I didn’t say affair.”

“I asked about the tattoo.”

He threw the towel onto the bed.

“This is ridiculous.”

“I’m going for a drive.”

He grabbed his keys.

Without another word he walked out.

Five seconds later…

I grabbed mine.

He never noticed me following.

I stayed four cars behind as he drove across town.

Not toward the grocery store.

Not toward the highway.

Not toward a friend’s house.

He drove directly to my father’s neighborhood.

Every muscle in my body locked.

Please…

Please let him be visiting Dad.

Please let there be another explanation.

The lights inside my father’s house were off.

His truck was parked in the driveway.

He usually went to bed by ten.

Glen didn’t park in front.

He parked around the corner.

Then he walked through the side gate.

Not the front door.

The side gate.

Like someone who had done it many times before.

I got out of my car.

Barefoot.

Silent.

The backyard fence wasn’t fully closed.

Through the narrow opening, I could see the patio.

Clara stepped outside wearing a robe.

She wasn’t surprised to see him.

She smiled.

She walked straight into his arms.

They kissed.

Not awkwardly.

Not briefly.

It was the kind of kiss that belonged to two people who had stopped hiding from each other long ago.

I couldn’t breathe.

Every excuse.

Every coincidence.

Every strange feeling I’d ignored.

Gone.

My husband.

My stepmother.

Behind my father’s back.

Behind mine.

I reached for my phone with shaking hands.

Not to call anyone.

Not to scream.

Not to confront them.

I pressed one button.

Record.

Because for the first time all day, I realized Ariel hadn’t accidentally ruined my daughter’s birthday.

She had saved me from spending the rest of my life believing two professional liars.

As I zoomed in on the screen, Clara rested her head against Glen’s chest and laughed softly.

Then I heard the one sentence that made me realize the betrayal was even bigger than I had imagined.

“We have to tell him about the money before he changes the will.”
