“Granny Pods” Now Allow Your Aging Parents to Live in Your Backyard

Thirty million American households provide some form of caregiving for adults over the age of fifty. Like many of you, I currently care for my parent with the help of two other family members. If you aren’t doing this already, there’s a good chance you will in the near future.

Is it stressful? Sometimes. Is it better than placing a parent in a nursing home? Evidence suggests it can be. Of course, not every family can support a parent at home in the way they wish they could. And in some cases, children choose nursing homes right away.

Nursing Home and Senior Statistics

Shocking nursing home statistics include:

  • Over 40% of residents have reported abuse, and more than 90% reported neglect.
  • A 2010 study found that up to half of nursing home caregivers admitted to elderly abuse and neglect.
  • Among Certified Nursing Assistants, about half admitted to verbally abusing residents, yelling, and using foul language.
  • In 2014, the CDC reported 15,600 nursing homes in the U.S. with about 1.7 million licensed beds.

Now consider this: by 2030, one in five Americans will be over the age of sixty-five, which equals about seventy million people.

What this means: the rapidly growing senior population is increasing faster than the facilities and resources that will (or won’t) be available to support them.

A 2015 AARP study also found that 90% of seniors prefer to age in their own homes. Interestingly, only 4% prefer moving into a relative’s home. But whether seniors can live independently often depends on their health and the safety features available in their living space.

Many seniors prioritize home safety features such as:

  • Non-slip floors (80%)
  • Bathroom grab bars (79%)
  • Emergency alert systems (79%)
  • Entrance ramps (77%)
  • Wider doorways (65%)

Sadly, many homes are not built with enough of these features in place.

That’s where MEDCottage, the creator of “Granny Pods,” comes in.

Why You Should Choose “Granny Pods”

What is MEDCottage?
Reverend Kenneth Dupin created MEDCottage after recognizing that seniors often have very few realistic choices for where and how they’ll spend their later years.

At some point, every senior faces a difficult turning point—when living alone becomes more dangerous than comforting. Reverend Dupin aimed to solve this with a two-part approach:

  • Seniors can maintain dignity and independence for as long as their minds and bodies allow.
  • Families can care for their parents nearby in a practical, efficient way—without being financially crushed.

What are “Granny Pods”?
Granny Pods are temporary, mobile living structures designed to keep aging parents safe, supported, and close to loved ones—often right in the backyard.

MEDCottage offers three models—Cottage, Classic, and Grand—each roughly twelve by twenty-four feet, built to connect to a property’s plumbing and electrical systems. Country Living described them as a bungalow on the outside and a hotel-like suite on the inside, complete with room for a bed, living space, a kitchenette, and a bathroom.

These units are designed to be senior-friendly and can be customized to match the needs of the person you’re helping. Safety features can include:

  • Pill dispensers
  • Webcams
  • Padded floors
  • Vital-sign monitors that alert caregivers if something is wrong

Cost: Nursing Home vs. Granny Pod

As of 2010, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services reported average long-term care costs for semi-private and private nursing home rooms at $205 to $230 per day, or $6,235 to $6,965 per month.

A Granny Pod, on the other hand, can be installed on your property starting at $85,000 and ranging up to $125,000.

That price can feel steep at first—but over time, many families find that keeping a parent close, safe, and cared for can be the option that benefits everyone most. Together.
