The case involved Brian Shaffer, a young medical student whose mysterious disappearance in 2006 had already become one of the most perplexing missing-person investigations in modern American history.
At the time, Shaffer was a second-year student at Ohio State University. On the night of March 31, he went out with friends in Columbus to celebrate the end of exams. Like many students that night, they eventually made their way to the crowded campus bar Ugly Tuna Saloona, located inside the Gateway entertainment complex.
Security cameras positioned around the entrance recorded Brian arriving with friends shortly before 2 a.m. At one point he stepped outside briefly to talk with two women near the entrance. The conversation lasted only a few seconds. Nothing in the footage appeared unusual. Afterward, Brian turned and walked back inside the bar.
Those few seconds of video would later become the final confirmed record of Brian Shaffer’s movements.
When he failed to return home or contact friends the next day, investigators began reconstructing his timeline using surveillance footage from the complex. Detectives carefully reviewed recordings showing people entering and leaving the bar throughout the night.
Everyone else who appeared entering eventually appeared leaving.

The entrance area was monitored by cameras covering the escalator and primary exit route used by patrons. Yet despite hours of analysis, investigators never located footage showing Brian leaving the bar or descending the escalator. For detectives, the implication was chilling: a man had clearly walked into a crowded venue full of witnesses and cameras, yet the visual trail simply ended.
Over the years, investigators explored numerous theories. Some suggested Brian may have slipped into a construction area within the building and exited through an unmonitored route. At the time, parts of the complex were undergoing renovation, and service corridors were accessible to workers. Detectives searched those areas but found no evidence linking them to Brian’s disappearance.
Another theory suggested that the crowded nightlife environment created a rare moment when he could leave unnoticed. Surveillance systems are not perfect, and brief blind spots can occur when large groups move through camera views at the same time.
