Part 2
I spent the evening with my friends at a quiet rooftop bar, laughing harder than I had in months. We toasted to dignity, to self-respect, and to never again accepting expensive cologne that wasn’t meant for us. For a few hours, I felt light. Free.
When I finally returned home around ten, the house was strangely quiet.
No angry shouting from the bathroom. No television. No sound of my husband recovering from his “important meeting.”
I stepped inside and immediately noticed two things:
First — the strong smell of that same expensive perfume still lingered in the hallway. Second — a pair of high heels that did not belong to me sat neatly by the door.
My stomach tightened.
I walked slowly toward the living room.
There, on my couch, sat Caroline.
The company’s new secretary.
She looked up when she heard me, completely calm, as if she had every right to be in my house. Her makeup was perfect. Her dress was elegant. And in her hands she held a small gift bag with the logo of a luxury jewelry store.
“You’re home earlier than expected,” she said politely.
I stared at her. “Where is my husband?”
Caroline tilted her head slightly. “In the bedroom. He wasn’t feeling well… after whatever you gave him this morning.” She smiled faintly. “Clever. I almost respect it.”
I took a step closer. “Why are you in my house?”
She placed the gift bag on the coffee table and stood up.
“Because he invited me,” she answered. “He said the two of you were already finished. That you both knew it. He asked me to come over tonight so we could… talk about the future.”
My hands curled into fists.
“He told you we were finished?”
Caroline nodded. “He also told me he was going to file for divorce next week. Quietly. So it wouldn’t affect his position at the company.”
I felt something cold settle in my chest.
Not heartbreak.
Clarity.
