Actor James Van Der Beek, best known for his breakout role in Dawson’s Creek, has died at 48 after battling colorectal cancer.

His family shared the news in an emotional Instagram statement, confirming he “passed peacefully,” and saying he faced his final days “with courage, faith, and grace.” They also asked for privacy as they mourn “our loving husband, father, son, brother, and friend.

Van Der Beek was survived by his wife and their six children — a family he often called his greatest source of strength. Even as he dealt with illness, he remained focused on faith, resilience, and using his platform to raise awareness.

Earlier this year, Van Der Beek publicly revealed his colorectal cancer diagnosis in an exclusive interview, describing it as a life-altering moment that reshaped his priorities. In another interview, he spoke about early symptoms — persistent fatigue and subtle physical changes — that he initially chalked up to stress and a demanding schedule. When the issues didn’t go away, he sought medical testing, which ultimately led to his diagnosis. He later urged others to pay attention to their bodies and not ignore warning signs.

A Career That Defined a Generation
Van Der Beek became a household name in the late 1990s as Dawson Leery, anchoring Dawson’s Creek through its six-season run and becoming a defining teen-TV figure of the era.

He went on to build a wide-ranging career across film and television, blending drama and comedy while maintaining a loyal fan base. In recent years, he also spoke openly about stepping away from Hollywood’s pace to prioritize family life, relocating with his wife and children for a quieter, more grounded home base.

His Final Public Moments
In one of his last major interviews, Van Der Beek sat down with Today and became visibly emotional while recalling September’s Dawson’s Creek reunion, where his family received a standing ovation. He couldn’t attend in person after being “hit with some stomach bugs,” but he appeared via Zoom and watched fans warmly embrace his loved ones in the room.

He explained that his absence wasn’t cancer-related and addressed the dramatic weight loss viewers noticed, reassuring fans: “I feel much, much better than I did a couple months ago.” He later added: “I’d lost so much weight because of the stomach virus, yeah,” Van Der Beek. “No, it was not cancer related. Although with cancer everything’s like, ‘Why don’t we super-size that stomach virus?’”

Fans responded with a mix of worry and hope. “It’s very sad to see him looking so sick,” one wrote. Another one said: “Oh God! May he recover completely. His wife and children need him”. Another fan added: “Its aged him tremendously. Praying for him”

Away from TV, his most recent Instagram post centered on family — a tender message dedicated to his daughter. “My father and my daughter share a birthday today. At first, I thought that was all they shared – they seemed so different to me.” he posted. The photo showed him gently hugging her, and it became his final update.

The loss of Van Der Beek at 48 marks a heartbreaking end to a journey he chose to face with openness and courage — leaving behind his wife, six children, and a legacy defined by both his career and his devotion to family.
