New details in the case surrounding disgraced Democrat judge Jose “Joel” Cano have emerged after he was forced to resign after a suspected Tren de Aragua Gang member was arrested in his home. Cristhian Ortega-Lopez, who illegally entered the country through Eagle Pass in Texas, was arrested in Cano’s home and charged with possession of a firearm by an illegal immigrant, which carries a possible 15-year sentence.
For context, Tren de Aragua is a violent Venezuelan gang that recently made the news after Trump attempted to use the Alien Enemies Act to deport gang members without a trial. Infamously, woke Judge James Boasberg issued a judicial freeze that tied the Trump administration in weeks of legal proceedings.
In any case, the story was published on X by a prominent conservative account on April 18, 2025. The post read, “NEW: Democrat Judge from New Mexico Abruptly Resigns After Suspected Tren de Aragua Gang Member Is Arrested for Firearm Possession at His Residence. Judge Jose “Joel” Cano reportedly submitted a letter of resignation in March.”
Adding to the story, the post explained how Ortega-Lopez was able to enter the country. It declared, “In February, HSI Venezuelan national El Paso arrested Cristhian Ortega-Lopez at a Las Cruces residence owned by Judge Cano following an anonymous tip. Ortega-Lopez had been residing in New Mexico after reportedly being apprehended by U.S. Border Patrol in December 2023 at Eagle Pass, Texas, following an illegal entry into the country by scaling a barbed wire fence.”
Continuing the explanation, the post assured the public that the illegal gangster was behind bars. The account reported, ” Despite the arrest, he was released just three days later due to overcrowding in detention facilities. He has been charged via criminal complaint with unlawfully possessing a firearm or ammunition as an illegal alien. He will remain in custody until his trial, which has yet to be scheduled. If found guilty, he could face up to 15 years in prison.”
In the comments under the post, users were incensed by the judge’s blatant disregard for the law. One such comment said, “I want to know why this JUDGE was not arrested also for HARBORING a criminal? How long will we let these people get away with these criminal acts? Judges are not above the law! @RealTomHoman @AGPamBondi @Sec_Noem.”
