My father str:uc:k me in the face with a brick after my fiancé refused to leave me for my sister, while my mother stood by laughing. “Let’s see if he still loves you now,” she sneered. I didn’t cry or fight back. At the hospital, I asked the staff to preserve every piece of evidence, never imagining that six eyewitnesses and an old family will would bring everything they had built crashing down.

Part 1: The Brick That Changed Everything

“Let’s see if Wyatt still loves you with that face,” my mother said before bursting into laughter that still echoes in my memory.

The brick struck me before I even realized my father had raised his arm. Only moments earlier, I had been standing on the cracked sidewalk outside my parents’ house in Columbus, wearing the pale blue dress I had bought for the family dinner where Wyatt and I planned to announce our wedding date. Then everything dissolved into blinding white.

The impact wasn’t especially loud, but the sound of bone giving way inside my skull was unmistakable. Warm blood streamed from my left eyebrow across my cheek and onto my lips as my legs collapsed beneath me.

Wyatt Campbell caught me before I could hit the concrete steps.

“Sadie, look at me, please don’t leave me, Sadie!”

I tried to open my left eye but saw nothing except darkness. Through my right eye, I spotted my mother, Brenda, standing near the old swing set. She made no effort to help, never reached for a phone, and showed no sign of panic. She simply watched me bleed while laughing.

My father, Gregory Davis, casually dropped the broken half of the brick onto the lawn.

“I warned you.”

His voice sounded as though he had finished an ordinary conversation instead of attacking his own daughter.

Wyatt stared at him in complete disbelief.

“What did you just do?”

No one answered him. Instead, my younger sister Melanie stepped out of the front door dressed for dinner, her polished appearance making her irritation seem directed more at the interruption than the violence itself.

“I told you he wasn’t going to change his mind,” Melanie said.

My mother adjusted her clothing and sighed.

“We tried to talk to him nicely.”

Wyatt carefully lowered me against one of the porch columns before standing to face them.

“You people are sick.”

My father smiled and pointed toward Melanie.

“No, you are just engaged to the wrong daughter.”

The brick had shattered part of my face, but those words cut even deeper.

“What?”

“Melanie should have always been in your place because Sadie is selfish and always has been,” my mother said.

Melanie looked down at me with open resentment.

“And yet you still chose her.”

Wyatt reached for his phone to call for help, but my father kicked it from his hand before he could dial. The phone smashed against the doorway, leaving the screen in pieces.

“Nobody here is going to call anybody.”

Wyatt shoved Gregory backward, and my father immediately lunged at him. The two of them crashed into the rose bushes while my mother and sister stood by without the slightest attempt to stop the fight.

Lying there, I realized this wasn’t an explosion of anger or a momentary loss of control. They had been moving toward this for months.

Everything had changed after Wyatt sold his construction company and became a millionaire. My parents suddenly began inviting him to endless family dinners, flattering him at every opportunity, and encouraging Melanie to appear wherever he happened to be, whether it was his office, his gym, his favorite coffee shop, or even outside our apartment.

Wyatt rejected every advance and blocked Melanie everywhere he could. Rather than accept that reality, she convinced my parents that I was somehow manipulating him and keeping him away from the family.

“You either marry Melanie,” Gregory shouted as he struggled with Wyatt, “or you get out of this family.”

“I love Sadie!”

“It will pass,” Melanie replied with complete indifference.

At that moment, an electrician’s truck pulled up in front of the house. The worker stepped out, immediately noticed my blood-covered face, and reached for his phone.

“I am going to call an ambulance right now!”

My father stormed toward him, but the electrician held his ground.

“Take another step and I will tell the police operator that you are attacking me too.”

Gregory stopped where he was.

Within minutes, the sound of approaching sirens filled the street as paramedics lifted me into the ambulance. Before the doors closed, I looked back toward the house and noticed an elderly man standing silently behind the living room curtains, his trembling hand pressed against the glass as though he wanted to warn me about something.

A second later, the curtain fell shut.

I had never seen him before, and I had no idea that his presence would soon change everything.
