My husband came home from a business trip with a beautiful dress for me.

“Just like that. Two weeks later, no one could locate her. Her driver suddenly quit his job. Her house was sold through an anonymous real estate agency. All her phones stopped working. And everyone who had done business with her suddenly pretended they had never even heard her name.”

A cold knot formed in my stomach. Everything about the story sounded carefully erased, as though someone had deliberately removed every trace of Nadia’s existence.

“Did you go to the police?”

She immediately shook her head.

“And say what? That I got myself involved in a massive tax fraud network, that I have in my possession copies of compromising government documents, and that the woman who implicated me has suddenly vanished? The very last thing I wanted to do was put myself in the spotlight.”

After taking a long breath, Chloeann explained what happened shortly before Nadia disappeared. She had been instructed to meet Nadia at the Grand Plaza Hotel, where she was promised financial compensation in exchange for returning the copied files.

“But before she disappeared, Nadia arranged to meet me at the Grand Plaza Hotel. She said she would give me financial compensation if I returned certain information to her. I did not go alone. I parked my car two blocks away and walked to the side entrance. When I arrived, she was already gone. All that was left waiting for me was a shopping bag from a high-end boutique. Inside that bag was that dress.”

I slowly looked back at the garment resting on the table. What had seemed like an elegant gift only hours earlier now felt more like a carefully delivered warning.

“And the initials on the tag?” I asked.

Chloeann pointed toward the embroidered letters inside the collar.

“Those are hers. Or at least the name she used with me. The note…” She pointed at the paper. “The note was hidden inside when she gave me the dress. I found it much later.”

I carefully unfolded the small piece of paper and read the single handwritten sentence hidden inside.

“If this ever reappears, it will be because someone already knows exactly who you are.”

A chill spread through my entire body.

“Why didn’t you ever tell Kenneth?”

She broke down completely.

“Because Kenneth will kill me if he finds out what I have gotten myself into,” she sobbed. “Because he thinks I just had a rough patch financially. Because… a month ago, I received an email from an anonymous account. It just said, ‘It will be revealed soon.’ And yesterday, your husband brings you the dress as a romantic gift. What would you have thought?”

The answer was painfully obvious. Someone had deliberately placed that dress into Kenneth’s hands, knowing it would eventually end up inside our home and force Chloeann to confront the secret she had spent months trying to bury.

I tried to organize everything we had learned into something that actually made sense.

“Did Kenneth have any idea who the private client was?”

“I don’t know,” she whispered.

“Do you still have those copies of the documents?”

She hesitated before answering.

“Yes, I do.”

I looked directly at her.

“Then it is no longer just a question of shame or pride. It is a question of genuine danger.”

Tears filled her eyes again.

“I do not want to drag you into this, Lucy.”

I quietly picked up my phone.

“You have already dragged us both into this.”

For several moments neither of us spoke. Finally, I unlocked my phone and prepared to call Kenneth, convinced he deserved to know that someone had used him to deliver a message neither of us understood.

“I am going to call Kenneth.”

Before I could press the screen, Chloeann grabbed my arm once again.

“No. If he bought the dress by pure chance, you are going to tear him apart for absolutely no reason. And if it was not by chance… then we first need to know which side he is actually on.”

I slowly lowered the phone back onto the table.

“Then we find out everything before he comes home tonight.”

For the first time since the panic began, Chloeann nodded with determination instead of fear.

“The copies are on a USB drive,” she said. “In my apartment.”

I picked up the folded dress and carefully avoided touching the embroidered initials.

“Let’s go get it.”

“And the dress?”

I slipped it into a garment bag before answering.

“The dress is coming with us.”

Part 3: The Messenger Who Never Knew He Was Carrying a Threat

We left my apartment without wasting another minute, carrying both the dress and the unanswered questions with us. The drive to Chloeann’s condominium felt unbearably tense, with neither of us speaking much while I kept checking my phone for a message from Kenneth that never came.

As soon as we arrived, Chloeann headed straight for her bedroom and pulled a worn shoebox from the back of her closet. Hidden beneath old bank receipts, an antique watch, and two expired passports was a small black USB drive.

“Here it is.”

I took the drive while looking at her.

“Okay. Now we need to know exactly what role Kenneth plays in all of this.”

She hesitated before asking the question that had clearly been haunting her for months.

“And what if Nadia is still alive?”

I held her gaze.

“Do you think she is dead?”

Chloeann slowly sat down on the edge of the bed.

“I don’t know. In that environment, people don’t disappear by moving to another city. They disappear because someone pays them a fortune to keep their mouth shut.”

I refused to draw conclusions without evidence. After connecting the USB drive to my laptop, I began opening folder after folder containing financial records, deleted emails, fraudulent contracts, photographs from private meetings, and files documenting transactions that stretched back months.

One folder immediately caught my attention.

“The Grand Plaza.”

Inside was a photograph taken in the hotel lobby. Nadia Jensen stood beside a tall man wearing a dark suit, and although only part of his face was visible, both Chloeann and I recognized him instantly.

“It’s Thomas O’Reilly,” I said in a low, shaky voice.

Thomas was the senior partner at Kenneth’s consulting firm, someone my husband admired and trusted completely. Kenneth had often credited him for opening doors throughout his career, describing him as the mentor who had helped shape his professional future.

We continued reviewing the files, and Thomas’s name appeared repeatedly, sometimes written in full and other times shortened to simple initials. One email immediately drew my attention because it answered the question neither of us had dared ask.
