After the front door closed and the new deadbolt clicked into place once again, I walked into the kitchen, poured myself a fresh cup of black coffee, and picked up my phone.

“I want him erased from my life, Arthur,” I said, watching the steam curl from my coffee. “Methodically, legally, and completely.”

“Consider it done,” Arthur replied. “Here is our immediate strategy:”

First, he moved to freeze the small joint checking account we had kept for household emergencies. Since Ethan’s primary spending had depended on my accounts, cutting off that final source of cash left him with virtually nothing.

Next came the divorce filing. Before noon, Arthur had already submitted an emergency petition citing adultery and abandonment, with Ethan’s own text message serving as the strongest piece of evidence.

Finally, we requested a temporary restraining order, arguing that his reckless financial behavior and increasingly hostile actions justified additional legal protection. If he returned home, he would not be allowed anywhere near the property.

Then everything became quiet.

For three peaceful days, the silence inside my house felt strangely comforting. The tension that had lingered for months simply disappeared.

Unable to make international calls, Ethan apparently found a public computer in Cancun and started sending increasingly desperate messages.

I read every word without reacting.

Rather than answering, I forwarded the email directly to Arthur so it could become part of the court record.

About an hour later, another message arrived.

Olivia, please, this was all Ethan’s idea. He told me you guys were essentially separated. He told me he had his own money. I have no way to get home, and he’s completely useless out here. I’m sorry. Please help me.

For a moment, I thought about fifteen years of friendship, birthdays, shared memories, and countless conversations. It was remarkable how quickly a so-called soulmate relationship could collapse once the money disappeared. I didn’t answer Amanda either, and instead simply closed my laptop before heading to my weekly yoga class. Six months later, everything came to an end.

When the final division of assets was complete, nearly everything remained exactly where it belonged. The house became mine alone, and my personal savings stayed fully protected. Ethan received no spousal support, and his finances ultimately collapsed into bankruptcy.

Today, sunlight fills my living room through freshly cleaned windows, reflecting across the polished oak floors without bringing back a single painful memory.

My phone vibrates with a notification from a real estate app. The listing for my new villa in the south of France is officially live.

I’m selling the old house. Not because I’m running from the past, but because it’s finally time to build something even better. I take another sip of coffee and look out across the quiet neighborhood. On the night Ethan left, I wished him good luck, and as it turns out, I meant every word.
