Part 2: My neighbor used to come over every day to ask for sugar with her baby in her arms

The knock came again, this time louder, more demanding. I froze, my heart pounding in my chest. I could hear the muffled sound of Lucy’s breath, shallow and rapid, as if she was holding herself together by a thread.

“Don’t open it,” I whispered urgently, stepping in front of her as if my body could somehow shield her from the threat that stood outside. I could feel the weight of the situation pressing down on me, but my voice remained steady. “Stay quiet. Let’s not give him any reason to think we’re here.”

Lucy nodded, clutching Emiliano to her chest as if the small child could protect her from the monster outside. The silence in the apartment was suffocating. I could almost hear Adrian’s footsteps echoing through the hallway, his impatience growing with every second.

Then came the voice.

“Lucy. I know you’re in there,” Adrian’s voice called out, the words dripping with menace. He knew she was here. He had to. There was no mistaking it. It was the way he said her name, like a command, like he owned her. I could feel the fury burning in my chest.

I turned to Lucy, taking her hand in mine. Her skin was cold, her body trembling. I knew what she was thinking. She was thinking about her son, about the consequences if Adrian found out she had tried to leave. I squeezed her hand tighter.

“You’re safe here, Lucy,” I reassured her. “He won’t get in. Not unless I let him.”

Another knock echoed through the door, louder this time, accompanied by Adrian’s voice growing more insistent. “Open the door, Lucy! I know you’re there!”

I glanced at the kitchen, where the tin with all the documents and supplies sat on top of the refrigerator. This was the moment. The plan had been in motion for months, but now, everything was about to change. There would be no turning back once we opened that door.

“I’m not afraid of him,” I muttered under my breath, though I wasn’t sure if I was convincing Lucy or myself.

“Please,” Lucy whispered, her eyes wide with fear. “What if—”

“Shh,” I cut her off softly, my voice firm. “Let’s get you out of here first. Then, we’ll deal with him.”

I moved toward the kitchen, grabbed the tin from the fridge, and set it on the table. Lucy didn’t move from the doorway, clutching Emiliano as if he were the last thing holding her together. I took a deep breath, trying to calm my nerves.

But then, I heard it.

The unmistakable sound of a key turning in the lock.

Adrian had somehow managed to get a copy of my key. My stomach twisted with dread. He was inside.

Part 3:

“Get ready,” I whispered urgently to Lucy, my mind racing. I knew this moment was going to be pivotal. Every second counted.

I hurried to the kitchen, grabbed the old cell phone I had kept hidden for her and shoved it into her hand. “Call your sister. Right now. Tell her you’re leaving.”

Lucy’s hands trembled as she clutched the phone, but she nodded. She had the will to survive now, I could see it in her eyes.

Meanwhile, I kept my focus on the door. I didn’t dare turn my back. Adrian was getting closer. I could hear his footsteps as they approached, slow and deliberate. His voice was muffled but growing clearer by the second.

He was searching for us.

With one hand, I grabbed the cane by the door. It had been years since I’d had to use it, but now, I had no choice. I wasn’t going to let him take her. I wasn’t going to let him hurt her anymore.

Suddenly, the door crashed open with a violent bang, the frame rattling under the force of his anger.

Adrian stood there, eyes burning with fury. His chest heaved with the effort of getting in, and when his eyes landed on Lucy, still standing at the doorway, his face twisted in a cruel smile.

“Lucy… I should’ve known,” he sneered, stepping into the apartment. He didn’t care that I was there. He didn’t care that I was an obstacle. His sole focus was on her. His voice was filled with venom as he snarled, “You thought you could escape?”

I stepped forward, blocking his path. “You’ll never touch her again,” I growled, my cane poised in front of me like a weapon. Adrian stopped, his eyes flicking to me for the first time. His surprise was fleeting—he was still underestimating me, just like he always had.

“I’m not going anywhere without my wife,” he spat, his hand reaching out toward Lucy.

Before I could react, he lunged forward. But I was quicker. I swung the cane in a wide arc, striking him across the chest. He staggered back, his eyes wide with shock, but it didn’t stop him. Adrian was used to power—his power over Lucy, over everything in his life. But he wasn’t used to me. He wasn’t used to someone standing up to him.

“I said, you’re not touching her,” I repeated, my voice steady but full of anger. “You’re done, Adrian.”

He growled, fists clenched at his sides, but there was hesitation now. The doubt was creeping in, the realization that I wasn’t someone he could just intimidate.

“Stay away from her,” I warned one last time.

Lucy stood behind me, trembling but no longer cowering. I could see it in her eyes—she was ready to fight. This was no longer just about survival. It was about reclaiming control.

Adrian took a step back, the realization dawning on him that he wasn’t going to win this battle. Not today.

“You think you’re going to protect her?” Adrian hissed, sneering at me. “You don’t even know what you’re dealing with. If I wanted to, I could—”

But before he could finish his threat, the door to the apartment burst open. Two uniformed officers stepped in, their guns drawn, and I finally breathed a sigh of relief. They had arrived just in time.

“Mr. Adrian Hale, you’re under arrest for assault, harassment, and battery,” one of the officers said, stepping forward and handcuffing him with practiced ease.

I looked at Lucy, who was still standing behind me, and then back at Adrian, who was now being taken out of the apartment.

He glared at us both, but there was nothing left in him. His power was gone. The monster that had once controlled her life was no more.

The officers led him away, and Lucy let out a soft, shuddering breath. It was over. She was finally free.

I turned to her, smiling gently. “You’re safe now. It’s over.”

She nodded, tears filling her eyes. “Thank you,” she whispered. “I don’t know how I would’ve made it without you.”

I gave her hand a squeeze. “You never have to make it alone again.”

For the first time in what felt like forever, Lucy smiled—really smiled—as Emiliano cooed in her arms.

It was over. But the future was wide open. And for the first time, we were both free.
