Melanie stepped inside without waiting for an invitation. The deputy followed, calm and official. The building manager lingered just behind them, clearly already briefed.
Melanie placed the black folder on the dining table, directly on top of Dorothy’s handwritten inventory.
“Mrs. Dorothy Hale,” she said evenly, “you are currently inside a private residence without legal authority. The key you used was never authorized by the current title holder.”
Dorothy’s face tightened. “I am Simon’s mother—”
“And Vera is Simon’s sole surviving spouse and the sole owner of this property,” Melanie interrupted. She opened the folder and slid the first document forward. “This is the recorded deed. Simon transferred full ownership of the apartment into Vera’s name three years ago. Your name appears nowhere on it.”
Knox scoffed. “That doesn’t mean—”
Melanie turned another page. “This is the last will and testament, signed and notarized six days before Simon’s death, with two independent witnesses present. Everything—every account, every asset, every personal belonging—passes to Vera. There is also a pour-over trust that was already funded. You were deliberately excluded.”
Dorothy’s voice rose. “He would never cut out his own mother!”
“He did,” Melanie replied. “And he left a letter explaining why. You’re welcome to read it later… in the presence of your own attorney, if you choose to hire one.”
The deputy cleared his throat. “Ma’am, I’m going to need everyone who does not live here to step away from the belongings and exit the premises. Any items already packed will be inventoried and returned. Attempting to remove property that does not belong to you can be treated as theft.”
One of the aunts dropped a handful of Simon’s watches back onto the table as if they had suddenly become hot.
I finally spoke, my voice quieter than I expected.
“Simon told me you would come. He said you would treat this place like it was already yours the moment he was gone. He also said that if I laughed first, the rest would take care of itself.”
Dorothy stared at me. For the first time, real fear flickered behind the anger.
