PART 2 — THE SECRET HIDDEN IN THE WALLS

Esteban García’s words stayed in Tomás Reyes’ mind long after the man stopped talking.

“I just wanted them not to take her away.”

For a moment, Tomás hated him.

He wanted to see only the father who failed. The man who ignored the signs. The man who let a little girl suffer alone inside a forgotten house.

But then he remembered Lili’s drawings.

The tiny girl in every picture.

The words written with a trembling hand.

Don’t take me away.

Someone had taught that child that asking for help meant losing the only person she had left.

And that thought terrified him more than anything.

Tomás leaned forward.

“Esteban, listen to me carefully. Whatever happened before tonight, the only thing that matters now is saving your daughter.”

The man looked up, tears running down his face.

“Can I see her?”

“I don’t know.”

The answer broke something in Esteban.

Tomás had seen criminals cry. He had seen people fake regret when the consequences finally arrived.

But this was different.

This was a father who looked like he had already buried his child in his mind.

“I made mistakes,” Esteban whispered. “A lot of them. But Lili… she was everything I had left.”

Tomás stood.

“Then help me find the truth.”

At the hospital, Dr. Cassandra Velázquez was waiting.

But she wasn’t alone.

Two specialists stood beside her, looking at medical images on a screen.

Tomás immediately knew something had changed.

“What happened?”

The doctor turned slowly.

“We found something.”

She pointed toward the scans.

“We still don’t know exactly what we’re dealing with. It’s not what the father believed. It’s not a pregnancy. But whatever has been growing inside her has been putting her body under extreme stress.”

Tomás stared at the screen.

A little girl.

Seven years old.

And somehow, everyone around her had missed what was happening.

“How did nobody notice?” he asked quietly.

Dr. Velázquez looked away.

“That’s the question everyone is going to have to answer.”

The room became silent.

Because they all knew.

This wasn’t just about medicine.

It was about a child who had been invisible.

A child whose pain had been explained away.

A child who had called 911 herself because nobody else came.

Then a nurse rushed in.

“Doctor… she’s awake.”

Tomás followed them to the doorway.

Lili looked impossibly small beneath the hospital blankets.

Her eyes opened slowly.

When she saw Tomás, she reached weakly toward him.

“Officer…”

He stepped closer.

“I’m here, Lili.”

Her lips trembled.

“Did you find my daddy?”

Tomás paused.

“Yes.”

“Is he mad?”

The question hit him harder than any accusation ever could.

“No, sweetheart.”

Lili looked at the ceiling.

“He said nobody would believe me.”

Tomás felt his jaw tighten.

“Who said that?”

The little girl didn’t answer.

Her eyes filled with fear.

“Lili,” Dr. Velázquez said gently, “you’re safe now. Nobody can hurt you here.”

The girl shook her head.

“No…”

Her voice became smaller.

“He said if I told, everyone would think I was bad.”

The room froze.

Tomás looked at the doctor.

The doctor looked back.

Because they both understood.

There was someone else.

Someone who had convinced this child to stay silent.

By morning, investigators had surrounded the abandoned house on Alamo Street.

Tomás returned with Mariana Flores from Child Protective Services.

The house looked different in daylight.

Not less terrifying.

Just more honest.

The darkness had hidden things.

The sunlight revealed them.

Mariana walked through the hallway slowly.

“How many times did someone come here?” she whispered.

Tomás looked at the old reports.

“Two official visits.”

Mariana closed her eyes.

“And nobody entered.”

The words were heavier than anger.

They searched every room.

Behind a loose piece of wood in the bedroom, investigators found something.

A small box.

Inside were photographs.

Letters.

And a notebook.

Mariana opened it carefully.

The first pages were drawings.

The same ones Lili had made.

But then they changed.

The drawings became darker.

The little girl stopped drawing herself smiling.

She drew herself hiding.

She drew a door.

She drew a shadow standing outside it.

Then, near the final pages, there was a sentence that made Mariana stop breathing.

“He said everyone would forget me.”

Tomás felt cold.

“Who?”

Mariana turned the page.

At the bottom, written much smaller:

“Mr. Adrian.”

The name meant nothing to Tomás at first.

Until Esteban heard it.

They brought him back for questioning.

The moment he saw the notebook, his face changed.

“You know that name,” Tomás said.

Esteban looked down.

“I thought he was gone.”

“Who is Adrian?”

The man swallowed.

“Someone who used to help my family.”

“Help?”

Esteban laughed bitterly.

“No. That’s what people thought.”

He explained that after Sara died, many people offered support.

Neighbors.

Charities.

People from the community.

Adrian was one of them.

He brought food.

He offered advice.

He told Esteban he understood broken families.

But slowly, he became someone who was always around.

Someone who knew too much.

Someone who made Esteban feel like he was being watched.

“When social services came before,” Esteban whispered, “I thought they were the danger. I thought they were going to take Lili.”

Tomás stared at him.

“And you never thought the person inside your home might be the danger?”

Esteban broke down.

“I was wrong.”

The silence afterward was unbearable.

Because sometimes the truth doesn’t arrive like a storm.

Sometimes it arrives like a whisper.

And by the time you hear it, the damage has already been done.

That afternoon, detectives found Adrian Cole.

He was not hiding.

He was sitting at a community center, surrounded by volunteers.

A respected man.

A familiar face.

The kind of person nobody suspects.

When Tomás approached him, Adrian smiled.

“Officer Reyes. Is something wrong?”

Tomás watched him carefully.

“Yes.”

The smile disappeared.

“We need to ask you some questions.”

Adrian remained calm.

Too calm.

“I’m happy to help.”

As detectives escorted him away, Tomás’s phone rang.

It was Dr. Velázquez.

He answered immediately.

“Doctor?”

Her voice was tense.

“Officer… Lili woke up again.”

Tomás looked toward Adrian.

“And?”

A long pause.

“She remembered something.”

“What?”

The doctor lowered her voice.

“She said the person who did this wasn’t afraid of being caught.”

Tomás felt his stomach tighten.

“Why?”

Another pause.

Then Dr. Velázquez said:

“Because he believed the entire system would protect him.”

Tomás looked at the police lights flashing across the street.

At the people watching.

At the man who had fooled everyone for years.

And he realized something.

Finding Lili was only the beginning.

Now they had to uncover how many people had helped keep her invisible.

And how far the truth had been buried.
