Johnny Mathis was the talk of the town once, captivating teens with his catchy voice.

The renowned vocalist Johnny Mathis, who is known for timeless hits like “Misty” and “Chances Are,” has charmed audiences for almost 60 years. He is currently 89 years old and is ready to retire, citing memory loss and aging as the reasons.

With a final show scheduled for May 18 at the Bergen Performing Arts Center in Englewood, New Jersey, Mathis intends to carry on with his Voice of Romance tour until the spring.

Unfortunately, there is bad news for anyone who were hoping to witness his concerts after June 2025. Since June 2025, Mathis’ team has formally canceled all of its planned shows.

A heartfelt note was included with the announcement:

Johnny Mathis is approaching his 90th birthday this year, as many of you may already be aware. Therefore, we regret to notify you that Mr. Mathis will be retiring from tours and live concerts due to his advanced age and memory problems.

It is a touching farewell to a man whose captivating lyrics and velvety voice have won hearts over centuries.

His Voice’s Romance
Johnny Mathis, a timeless character in America’s rich musical heritage, was born in Gilmer, Texas, on September 30, 1935, and grew up in San Francisco, California. He gained widespread recognition for his romantic and sultry ballads.

Inspired by his father, a vaudeville singer and pianist, Mathis started his musical career early, receiving classical music training before going professional at the age of 13. Seeing Mathis’ potential, his father supported his musical endeavors by spending a meager $25 (about $447 in today’s currency) on a used upright piano.

Mathis was inspired by the jazz culture in San Francisco, where he grew up, and he was especially touched by the renowned Duke Ellington.

“Ellington’s intelligence made him one of my heroes.” According to Mathis (1990), “He was a sophisticated man without being conceited or haughty, and his music definitely sounded like he looked.”

With the legendary successes “Chances Are” and “It’s Not for Me to Say,” Mathis made his breakthrough in 1957 and cemented his place in pop music history. His record “Johnny’s Greatest Hits” made history that year by staying on the Billboard charts for an astounding 490 weeks in a row.

Mathis’ career took off after that, recording more than 70 albums and selling over 350 million copies worldwide, making a significant impact on the music industry. He has earned the adored moniker “The Voice of Romance” thanks to well-known hits like “Wonderful! Wonderful!,” “The Twelfth of Never,” and his treasured Christmas albums, which are associated with romance and nostalgia.

An Honorable Career
In addition to being a financial success, Johnny Mathis has won numerous important honors throughout the course of his lengthy career.

In recognition of his enormous contributions to music, Mathis was given a Grammy Award in 2003 for Lifetime Achievement. He was admitted into the Great American Songbook Hall of Fame and received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

We consider the enormous legacy that Johnny Mathis leaves behind as he prepares for his last tour. For many decades to come, his music will continue to uplift and touch people’s hearts. For the comfort of all ticket holders, Mathis has promised that reimbursements for cancelled concerts would be processed at the moment of purchase.

Even though it’s a momentous occasion as Mathis leaves the limelight, his impact on music will never fade. Let’s celebrate Johnny Mathis, whose endearing voice will always be heard.
