“Tell me what?”

His hands trembled slightly before he finally looked at me.

“Natalie, Vanessa wasn’t supposed to inherit the house.”

“I know.”

“No.”

He swallowed before continuing.

“I mean she was never legally entitled to inherit from me at all.”

I stared at him, unable to understand what he meant.

“What does that mean?”

Dad closed his eyes.

“Vanessa isn’t my daughter.”

For several seconds, I couldn’t process the sentence. Dad explained that thirty-two years earlier, our mother had admitted Vanessa wasn’t biologically his because she had been having an affair, and he discovered the truth when Vanessa was six.

“But you raised her.”

“Of course I did.”

“Did Vanessa know?”

Dad hesitated.

“No.”

Margaret quietly interrupted.

“There’s more.”

Dad gave her a warning look, but she continued anyway.

“Elaine’s affair wasn’t with a stranger.”

The color disappeared from Dad’s face, and suddenly I wasn’t sure I wanted to hear the answer.

“Who?”

Dad’s voice dropped almost to a whisper.

“Harold Pike.”

Harold, Dad’s closest friend and the man Vanessa had always known as “Uncle Harold,” was actually her biological father. Dad had learned the truth decades earlier but chose to keep it hidden because he refused to punish Vanessa for something she hadn’t done.

“You should have told her.”

“I know.”

“No, Dad. You don’t hide something like that for thirty years.”

Dad’s eyes filled with emotion.

“I was afraid she’d think I didn’t love her.”

The irony was almost unbearable. Dad had spent decades protecting Vanessa from a truth he feared might make her question his love, while she and Grant now appeared to have constructed a scheme around his death and inheritance.

Later that morning, Detective Miguel Santos arrived because the bank had already reported the forged documents. Dad explained everything, and Santos listened carefully before asking an unexpected question.

“Mr. Cole, when did you last speak to Harold Pike?”

Dad frowned.

“Yesterday morning.”

“Are you sure?”

“Yes.”

Santos exchanged a glance with Margaret and then looked toward me.

“Harold Pike died last night.”

Nobody spoke.

“What?” Dad whispered.

“Approximately eleven thirty.”

Vanessa’s phone call suddenly took on an entirely different meaning. She hadn’t lied about someone dying the previous night.

She had lied about who it was.

Dad stood abruptly.

“No. I talked to him yesterday. He was fine.”

“He was found at his home,” Santos replied.

“Cause?”

“Possible cardiac event.”

The detective’s expression suggested he wasn’t convinced by that explanation. Then he placed a sealed evidence bag on the table containing a folded note discovered beside Harold.

Dad instinctively reached toward it, but Santos stopped him.

“I can’t let you touch it.”

“What does it say?”

Santos read the message aloud.

“Richard knows everything. Vanessa must never find out.”

The room became silent again. Harold’s final message contained Vanessa’s name, and whatever our family had buried for thirty-two years was clearly no longer staying buried.

Then Santos revealed one final detail.

“We checked Mr. Pike’s phone.”

“Who called him?”

“He received seventeen calls yesterday.”

“From whom?”

The detective looked directly at me.

“Grant Cole.”

By that afternoon, police had located Vanessa and Grant hiding at a motel forty miles away. Grant was arrested for financial fraud, while Vanessa was taken in for questioning and admitted making the false death call, attempting the money transfer, and knowing the power of attorney was questionable.

She insisted, however, that she had never intended to harm Dad. According to Vanessa, Grant had told her Dad died overnight and claimed Harold had confirmed everything.

Then investigators received Harold’s autopsy results.

His death hadn’t been natural.

He had been poisoned.

Even worse, the substance involved matched medication Dad himself took for his heart. Vanessa broke down when investigators revealed the result, while Grant immediately stopped answering questions and requested an attorney.

Dad didn’t speak for almost an hour after learning Harold had been killed. Sitting beside him, I believed we had finally uncovered the darkest secret in our family.

I was wrong.

PART 2: The Secret Buried for Thirty-Two Years

The following morning, Margaret called and told Dad and me to come to her office immediately. When we arrived shortly before eleven, Vanessa was already there with Detective Santos, looking completely exhausted, her eyes swollen from crying and all traces of her usual confidence gone.

The moment Vanessa saw Dad, her expression collapsed.

“I’m sorry.”

Dad didn’t respond. Margaret instead placed the battered metal lockbox Dad had brought to my apartment onto the conference table.

“This belonged to Elaine.”

Dad frowned because he had previously been led to believe the box belonged to Margaret.

“I thought you said it was yours.”

“I lied.”

Margaret unlocked it and revealed dozens of old letters. Most had been written to Harold, but there were also individual envelopes addressed to Dad, Vanessa, and me.

My hands began trembling when Margaret passed mine across the table. Written on the front in Mom’s handwriting were words that immediately made me uneasy.

“For Natalie, when Richard finally tells the truth.”

I opened the envelope and started reading. The first sentence confirmed what Dad had revealed the previous day.

“Natalie, if you’re reading this, Richard has probably told you that Harold is Vanessa’s father.”

I looked up at Dad, and he silently nodded. Then I continued.

“That part is true.”

The next sentence changed everything.

“What Richard does not know is that Harold is also your father.”

I stopped reading.

Dad stared at me.
