Part 3

That night, after Leo went to bed, I sat on the back porch with Mrs. Johnson. The letter lay between us.

“She came to me two days after she left the hospital,” Mrs. Johnson said softly. “She could barely speak through the tears. She told me she was terrified she would hurt him the way she had been hurt. She asked me to look after both of you and to keep the letter safe until he turned eighteen. She never asked for news. She never tried to see him. She only wanted him to have a childhood free of her fear.”

I stared out into the dark yard.

Eighteen years of anger shifted inside me. The resentment that had lived in my chest for so long did not vanish, but it changed shape. It became something quieter—grief mixed with a reluctant, painful understanding.

Leo had grown up knowing only love. He had never once asked about his mother in a way that sounded broken. He had simply accepted the life we built together. That fact alone told me Goldi had been right about one thing: he had been safe with me.

The next morning I sat Leo down at the kitchen table and read the letter to him, slowly and without rushing. When I finished, he was quiet for a long time.

Then he said, “She was scared.”

“Yes.”

“But she still loved me.”

“Yes.”

He nodded, fitting the new truth into the story of his life. “I’m glad you stayed, Dad.”

I pulled him into a hug and held on longer than usual.

“I’m glad I stayed too.”
