Part 2

The ambulance arrived within minutes. While paramedics carefully lifted Mariana onto the stretcher, I stayed by her side, holding her hand.

“Mom… don’t do anything crazy,” she whispered weakly. “They’re powerful.”

I kissed her forehead and smiled.

“Rest, mija. Let me handle this.”

As the ambulance doors closed, I got into my car and drove straight to the Salazar house — the same luxurious home I had once visited for family dinners.

The Christmas decorations were still up. Lights twinkled mockingly. Two luxury cars were parked outside.

I didn’t knock.

I walked straight in.

Rodrigo was in the living room adjusting his tie, looking perfectly composed. Doña Beatriz sat on the sofa sipping coffee, as if nothing had happened.

When they saw me, both froze.

“Teresa?” Rodrigo said, surprised. “What are you doing here?”

I looked him dead in the eyes.

“I came to see the man who beat my daughter half to death and left her bleeding at a bus station.”

Doña Beatriz stood up quickly. “This is a private matter. You have no right—”

“I have every right,” I cut her off. My voice was calm but sharp as a blade. “Mariana is in the hospital right now with broken ribs, a fractured orbital bone, and internal bleeding. The police are on their way.”

Rodrigo’s face turned pale. “You called the police? Are you insane? This will ruin my reputation!”

“Your reputation?” I stepped closer. “You almost killed my daughter because she refused to be replaced like an old toy. And you want to talk about reputation?”

Doña Beatriz tried to regain control. “It was just a little correction. She disrespected us first—”

I slammed the medical report the paramedics had given me onto the table. Photos of Mariana’s injuries spilled out.

“Does this look like a ‘little correction’ to you?”

For the first time, real fear flashed across their faces.

Rodrigo’s voice cracked. “Teresa, we can fix this. Money, whatever you want—”

“I don’t want your money,” I said coldly. “I want you both in handcuffs.”

Part 3 The police arrived five minutes later.

The police arrived five minutes later.

Rodrigo tried to act innocent, but the blood they found on the bedroom floor and the security camera footage I already knew existed (because I had advised my daughter to install it months ago) told a different story.

Doña Beatriz screamed and cursed as officers put cuffs on her wrists.

“You think you’re so important?” she spat at me. “You’re nothing but a lonely widow!”

I stepped close and looked her straight in the eyes.

“I may be a widow,” I said quietly, “but I spent thirty years putting monsters like you and your son behind bars. You picked the wrong mother to underestimate.”

As they dragged Rodrigo and Beatriz out of their beautiful house, neighbors watched in shock. The Christmas lights kept twinkling, but the party was over.

Later that afternoon, I sat beside Mariana’s hospital bed. Her face was bandaged, but she was stable. She squeezed my hand.

“Mom… thank you.”

I brushed the hair from her forehead.

“No more thank yous. From now on, you’re coming home with me. We’re going to heal. And then we’re going to make sure those two never hurt anyone again.”

Rodrigo and Doña Beatriz were charged with attempted murder, aggravated assault, and domestic violence. The case moved fast — because I made sure it did.

Months later, when the judge sentenced them both to prison time, I stood outside the courtroom with Mariana.

She looked at me and whispered, “I thought I was alone.”

I hugged her tightly.

“You were never alone, mija. You just didn’t know how strong your mother really is.
