PART 2 — THE BABY THEY REJECTED BECAME THE TRUTH THEY COULDN’T ESCAPE

I held that little girl against my chest for what felt like hours.

The hospital room had gone from a place of celebration into something I barely recognised.

Only a few minutes earlier, I had imagined taking photos of Claire holding her daughter for the first time. I imagined her crying happy tears, whispering that she finally became a mother.

Instead, I was watching the woman I had loved my entire life look at her own child like she was a mistake.

A nurse stood quietly near the door, pretending not to hear the conversation, but I could see the confusion on her face.

Nobody understood what was happening.

Not even me.

“Claire,” I said again, my voice shaking. “Explain to me what you mean.”

My sister avoided my eyes.

That hurt more than her words.

Claire had been the person I called when my marriage ended. The person who sat beside me when I lost my parents. The person who knew every secret I had ever carried.

And now she couldn’t even look at me.

Evan finally spoke.

“Marianne… we need some time.”

I almost laughed because I couldn’t believe what I was hearing.

“Time?”

I looked down at the baby sleeping peacefully in my arms.

“You don’t need time. You need to explain why you walked into this room and rejected a newborn child.”

Claire’s face tightened.

“It’s not that simple.”

“Then make it simple.”

Silence.

The baby moved slightly, making the smallest sound.

Immediately, my arms tightened around her.

That tiny noise reminded me of everything I had gone through for her.

The nausea.

The exhaustion.

The fear every time I felt something wasn’t right.

The nights I couldn’t sleep because my back hurt so badly.

The appointments where I sat alone because Claire had to work.

The moments when I talked to the baby inside me and promised her that she was already loved.

I had carried her because I believed she was Claire’s miracle.

But standing there, I realised something.

I had spent nine months protecting a child who might have nobody waiting for her.

“Tell me the truth,” I whispered.

Claire looked at Evan.

That single glance told me everything.

They were hiding something.

“What were you expecting?” I asked.

Neither of them answered.

“Claire.”

Her eyes filled with tears.

“We were told…”

“Told what?”

She swallowed.

“We were told the baby might have certain characteristics.”

I stared at her.

“What does that mean?”

Evan stepped forward.

“We had expectations.”

My stomach turned.

“Expectations?”

I looked at the baby.

“You mean you only wanted her if she matched some picture in your head?”

“No,” Claire said quickly.

But her voice lacked conviction.

“Then what?”

She wiped away a tear.

“We were hoping for a different outcome.”

Those words stayed in the air.

A different outcome.

Like this baby was a failed order.

Like she wasn’t a person.

Like she wasn’t breathing.

Like she wasn’t already mine to protect.

I felt something inside me break.

“Get out.”

Claire looked shocked.

“What?”

“You heard me.”

“Marianne…”

“No.”

My voice became stronger.

“For nine months, you called her your miracle. You touched my stomach and cried when she kicked. You told me you already loved her.”

Claire lowered her head.

“I do love her.”

“Do you?”

That question made her freeze.

Because she knew.

She didn’t have an answer.

The next morning, a social worker came into my room.

Apparently, the hospital had concerns because the intended parents were refusing immediate bonding and had not completed the final paperwork.

I sat there holding the baby while the woman explained everything.

I couldn’t stop staring at the little face resting against my arm.

She had no idea what was happening.

She only knew warmth.

She only knew my heartbeat.

The same heartbeat she had listened to for nine months.

“Do you know what happens now?” the social worker asked gently.

I looked up.

“I want to know.”

She hesitated.

“Because you are the biological carrier, there are legal steps that need to be reviewed. Especially since the intended parents are expressing uncertainty.”

Uncertainty.

That was the polite word.

They didn’t want their daughter.

Not because she was sick.

Not because something was wrong.

Because she wasn’t what they imagined.

When Claire came back that afternoon, she looked exhausted.

For a moment, I saw my sister again.

The girl who used to hold my hand when we were scared.

The girl who promised we would always protect each other.

“Marianne,” she whispered.

I didn’t answer.

She looked at the baby.

“Can I hold her?”

My instinct was to say no.

But then I looked at the little girl.

This wasn’t about revenge.

This wasn’t about hurting Claire.

This was about making sure this baby was loved.

I carefully placed her in Claire’s arms.

The moment my sister looked down, her expression changed.

For a few seconds, she looked like the woman I thought she would become.

A mother.

Then Evan walked in.

And everything changed.

He looked at the baby.

Then at Claire.

“We need to talk.”

Claire immediately looked nervous.

I watched them step into the hallway.

I couldn’t hear every word.

But I heard enough.

“We can’t change our decision,” Evan said.

My heart dropped.

Claire whispered something.

Then Evan said the sentence that made my blood run cold.

“If we take her, our entire life changes.”

I stood frozen.

Because at that moment, I finally understood.

This was never about the baby.

It was about them.

Their dreams.

Their image.

Their perfect little family.

And this little girl had become inconvenient because reality didn’t match their fantasy.

That night, I sat alone in the hospital room.

The baby slept beside me.

I stared at her tiny hand wrapped around my finger.

And I made the decision that would change all of our lives.

I called a lawyer.

Not because I wanted to punish my sister.

Not because I wanted to steal her child.

But because someone had to fight for a baby who couldn’t fight for herself.

The next morning, Claire and Evan walked into my room expecting me to apologise.

They expected the woman who had always sacrificed everything for them to step aside again.

But they didn’t know what I had already done.

They didn’t know about the documents I had signed.

They didn’t know about the conversation I had recorded.

And they definitely didn’t know the one truth that would destroy their entire plan…

The baby they abandoned was not the problem.

They were.
