PART 2 — THE BOX BEHIND THE WALL

The moment Thomas unfolded the old baby blanket, the entire room went silent.

I stood frozen in the doorway, unable to understand what I was seeing.

Inside the blanket was a small wooden box.

Not a treasure chest. Not something expensive-looking.

It was old, scratched, and covered in years of dust. The kind of box someone would normally throw away without a second thought.

But Thomas looked at it like he had just found a piece of his own heart.

His hands hovered over the box for several seconds before he finally opened it.

The first thing inside was a stack of photographs.

Old photographs.

The edges were yellowed, and some of them were bent from years of being hidden inside the wall.

Thomas picked up the first picture.

The second he saw it, his face completely changed.

His confident, desperate expression disappeared.

He looked broken.

“That’s her,” he whispered.

My husband, Ryan, stepped closer.

“Who?”

Thomas didn’t answer immediately.

He stared at the photograph like he was afraid it would disappear.

“That’s my daughter.”

I felt a chill run through me.

The room suddenly felt much smaller.

Thomas slowly sat down on the floor, still holding the picture.

“My wife and I lived here thirty-two years ago,” he said quietly. “This was her bedroom.”

He looked around the room.

The pink curtains. The stuffed animals. The little nightlight shaped like a moon.

“She loved this room.”

I crossed my arms, still unsure whether I should trust him.

“You said you left a valuable box here,” I said carefully. “You never mentioned a daughter.”

Thomas looked down.

Because the answer was written all over his face.

This wasn’t about money.

It was something much deeper.

“My daughter’s name was Lily,” he said.

The name sounded strangely familiar.

“Lily disappeared when she was four years old.”

My heart dropped.

I looked toward the hallway where my own four-year-old daughter was sleeping.

“What do you mean disappeared?”

Thomas swallowed hard.

“The police searched everywhere. The neighborhood searched. We searched for months.”

His voice cracked.

“But nobody found her.”

The room went completely quiet.

Ryan moved closer to me.

“What does that have to do with this house?”

Thomas looked back at the box.

“When Lily vanished, everyone assumed the worst. My marriage fell apart. My wife blamed herself. I blamed myself.”

He opened the box again.

Inside were more photographs, handwritten letters, and a small stuffed rabbit with one missing ear.

“This was hers.”

He touched the rabbit gently.

“She carried it everywhere.”

I felt tears forming in my eyes.

“But why was it hidden in the vent?”

Thomas looked at the wall.

“Because I hid something here.”

Ryan frowned.

“You hid your daughter’s belongings?”

“No.”

Thomas shook his head.

“I hid evidence.”

That word changed everything.

Evidence.

My husband and I exchanged a look.

Thomas pulled out a folded piece of paper from the bottom of the box.

It was worn and fragile.

“I found this years after Lily disappeared.”

He unfolded it carefully.

“It was inside this box.”

He handed it to Ryan.

The handwriting was messy, almost like someone had written it while rushing.

Ryan read it silently.

Then his face became serious.

“What does it say?”

Ryan looked at me.

“It’s a note.”

Thomas took the paper back.

“My daughter wrote this.”

I stared at him.

“A four-year-old wrote that?”

Thomas nodded.

“She was learning letters. She could barely spell. But she knew enough.”

His voice became softer.

“She wrote the name of the person who took her.”

My entire body went cold.

“Who?”

Thomas looked toward the bedroom door.

“The person who lived here after us.”

Nobody spoke.

The air felt heavy.

“Wait,” Ryan said. “You mean another owner?”

Thomas nodded.

“After Lily disappeared, the house was sold. My family couldn’t stay here anymore.”

He looked at the floor.

“Years later, I discovered something.”

He pointed at the vent.

“This hiding place wasn’t part of the original house design. Someone created it.”

My husband looked inside the open vent.

“What are you saying?”

Thomas took a deep breath.

“I’m saying whoever took my daughter knew this house.”

A terrible thought crossed my mind.

“Then why come here now? After thirty years?”

Thomas looked down at the old box.

“Because I found a letter three days ago.”

He reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a small envelope.

The paper was new.

He handed it to me.

I opened it slowly.

Inside was one sentence.

My hands started shaking.

“The truth is still behind the wall where you left it.”

I looked up.

“Who sent this?”

Thomas’s face turned pale.

“I don’t know.”

“But you came here because of this?”

“Yes.”

“Why didn’t you call the police?”

His eyes filled with regret.

“Because I already did that thirty years ago.”

He looked at the photographs.

“And nobody believed me.”

Suddenly, we heard a noise from downstairs.

A small sound.

Like something had fallen.

Ryan immediately turned toward the door.

“Did you hear that?”

Thomas stood up quickly.

For the first time since entering our house, he looked afraid.

Not desperate.

Not emotional.

Terrified.

“That’s impossible.”

“What?” Ryan asked.

Thomas stared toward the stairs.

“When I bought this house, there was only one vent connected to this wall.”

He slowly pointed toward the bedroom.

“But there was another hidden compartment.”

My stomach tightened.

“Where?”

Thomas looked at the wall behind my daughter’s bed.

“The builders sealed it.”

Ryan grabbed his phone.

“Why?”

Thomas didn’t answer.

Because at that exact moment…

A faint scratching sound came from inside the wall.

All three of us froze.

It wasn’t the sound of pipes.

It wasn’t the sound of the house settling.

It sounded like something was moving.

Something inside the wall.

Thomas slowly walked toward it.

His face had gone completely white.

“No…”

“What is it?” I whispered.

He placed his hand against the wall.

Then he said something that made my blood run cold.

“That compartment was never empty.”

Ryan immediately stepped between Thomas and me.

“Everyone needs to step away from the wall.”

But Thomas wasn’t listening.

He was staring at the place where my daughter had slept every night.

Because carved into the wooden panel beside the vent were three tiny letters that had been hidden under years of paint.

Letters only someone who knew the house would recognize.

L I L Y

And underneath them was a message scratched into the wood.

A message that had been waiting thirty years for someone to find it.

“Daddy, I’m still here.”
