PART 2 — THE DAY COLE LOST EVERYTHING HE THREW AWAY
When I walked into Cole’s office that morning, I expected to see embarrassment.
Maybe guilt.
Maybe even regret.
But I never expected to see the man who had walked out on me and our six children standing in the middle of the conference room, surrounded by his coworkers, looking like his entire world had collapsed.
Cole was usually the kind of man who walked into a room believing he owned it.
He wore expensive suits.
He spoke loudly.
He loved reminding people about his achievements.
For sixteen years, I had watched him chase promotions, attend business dinners, and spend hours making sure everyone at work knew how successful he was.
But that morning?
He looked completely defeated.
His tie was crooked.
His face was pale.
And his phone was sitting on the table in front of him like it was evidence against him.
Mark rushed over to me.
“Thank God you’re here,” he whispered.
I looked at him, confused.
“What happened?”
Mark glanced toward Cole before lowering his voice.
“Everything.”
I stared across the room at my husband.
The same man who had looked me in the eyes the night before and told me I was no longer attractive.
The same man who had blamed me for changing after six pregnancies.
The same man who packed a suitcase and walked away without once asking how our children would feel.
“What does this have to do with me?” I asked.
Mark sighed.
“Because you’re the only person who can confirm what happened.”
My stomach tightened.
“What are you talking about?”
Then the conference room door opened.
And Alyssa walked in.
The woman who had destroyed my marriage.
The personal trainer who had convinced my husband that his life would be better without me.
She looked nothing like the confident woman from the messages.
She looked nervous.
Uncomfortable.
Almost scared.
Cole immediately stood up.
“Alyssa, what are you doing here?”
She didn’t answer.
Instead, she looked at everyone in the room.
Then she looked at me.
And for a moment, neither of us said anything.
I expected her to act proud.
I expected her to smile like she had won.
But she didn’t.
She looked down at the floor.
Mark stepped forward.
“Everyone in this office knows what happened yesterday.”
Cole’s expression changed.
“What are you talking about?”
Mark pointed at the phone on the table.
“Your messages.”
The room became silent.
Cole’s face turned bright red.
“You went through my phone?”
“No,” Mark said coldly. “Your phone connected to the company cloud system because you used it for work. The messages were backed up automatically.”
My heart started beating faster.
I hadn’t expected that.
I had only seen one message.
But apparently, there were hundreds.
Months of conversations.
Months of lies.
Months of Cole telling Alyssa things he had never said to me.
Things that made my hands shake when I heard them.
“He told her he was going to leave me after the youngest child started school,” Mark said.
I looked at Cole.
He avoided my eyes.
“He told her he was tired of pretending to love me.”
My throat tightened.
Because those words hurt more than the affair itself.
I had spent years wondering if I was failing as a wife.
If I wasn’t enough.
If I had somehow pushed him away.
But hearing that he had been planning this while I was raising our children broke something inside me.
Then Alyssa finally spoke.
“I didn’t know everything.”
Everyone turned toward her.
Cole looked furious.
“What are you doing?”
She ignored him.
“I thought he was already separated.”
I laughed quietly.
Not because it was funny.
Because it was unbelievable.
“You thought he was separated while he was coming home every night?”
She looked ashamed.
“He told me you two were basically roommates. He said you hadn’t loved each other for years.”
I looked at Cole.
He had no answer.
Because he knew the truth.
The truth was that while he was telling another woman our marriage was dead, I was packing his lunches.
I was washing his clothes.
I was helping our children with homework.
I was waiting for him to come home.
Alyssa took a deep breath.
“I found out yesterday that he was still married. That’s when I ended things.”
Cole’s eyes widened.
“Wait. You’re breaking up with me?”
She shook her head.
“I’m not going to be someone’s secret.”
The room went completely silent.
And for the first time since this nightmare began, I saw Cole experience what I had felt.
Rejection.
Humiliation.
Loss.
He had left me because he thought he found something better.
But the woman he left me for didn’t even want him once the truth came out.
Then Mark showed me another document.
My confusion turned into shock.
It was a report from the company.
Cole had been under investigation for months.
Not because of the affair.
Because of his behavior at work.
He had been missing meetings.
Making careless decisions.
Using company resources for personal reasons.
And apparently, the final incident happened that morning.
He had accidentally sent one of his private messages to a company group chat instead of Alyssa.
The entire department had seen it.
That was how everyone found out.
Cole wasn’t just embarrassed.
His career was falling apart.
The man who told me I wasn’t attractive enough had destroyed his own reputation trying to impress someone else.
He finally looked at me.
“Can we talk?”
For a second, I almost remembered the man I married.
The man who held my hand during the birth of our first child.
The man who promised me forever.
But then I remembered his words.
“You’re not attractive to me anymore.”
“You believe everything like an idiot.”
Those words had changed everything.
“No,” I said quietly.
He looked shocked.
“What?”
“I don’t think we have anything left to talk about.”
His face changed.
“You don’t mean that.”
I looked him directly in the eyes.
“Last night, you made your choice.”
My voice shook, but I didn’t cry.
“You chose a woman who made you feel young over the family that stood beside you for sixteen years.”
Cole stepped toward me.
“I made a mistake.”
I nodded.
“Yes. You did.”
“But people forgive mistakes.”
“They do,” I said. “But forgiveness doesn’t mean pretending nothing happened.”
I walked away from him.
For the first time in years, I wasn’t thinking about whether Cole was happy.
I wasn’t thinking about how to save our marriage.
I was thinking about myself.
And my children.
When I got home that afternoon, my six kids ran toward me.
They didn’t know everything yet.
They only knew their father had left.
My youngest hugged my waist.
“Mommy, is Daddy coming back?”
That question nearly broke me.
But I knelt down and hugged all of them.
And I realized something.
Cole thought leaving me would destroy me.
He thought I was nothing without him.
But he forgot one important thing.
I had spent sixteen years building a family.
Raising children.
Keeping a home together.
Being strong when nobody noticed.
I wasn’t the woman he left behind.
I was the woman who survived him leaving.
And the biggest surprise was still waiting.
Because three days later, I received a call from Cole’s lawyer.
And the first sentence he said made me realize that Cole’s betrayal had cost him far more than his job…
It had cost him everything.
