The footsteps stopped right outside my bedroom door.

The footsteps stopped right outside my bedroom door.

The footsteps stopped right outside my bedroom door.

I couldn’t breathe.

The small servant’s room suddenly felt like a coffin.

Then came three slow knocks.

Not loud.

Not rushed.

Almost… deliberate.

I backed away instinctively, my heart slamming against my ribs.

“Maria,” a male voice said quietly from the other side. “Open the door.”

Alexander.

I nearly collapsed from relief.

The moment I unlocked it, he rolled himself inside, face pale and tense.

“How did you get down here?” I whispered.

“I saw Victor’s security man leaving your room.”

My stomach dropped.

Victor DeLuca.

Alexander’s uncle.

The man currently controlling the entire DeLuca empire.

Alexander closed the door carefully behind him and held up something in his hand.

My missing notebook.

“They took this,” he said grimly. “But they didn’t realize I saw where the guard hid it.”

Fear crawled through me.

“They know,” I whispered.

Alexander’s jaw tightened.

“No,” he replied. “But they suspect.”

For a long moment neither of us spoke.

Then Alexander suddenly grabbed the wheels of his chair and pushed himself toward me with determination burning in his eyes.

“We’re done hiding.”

I stared at him.

“What?”

He opened the notebook to the latest therapy notes — dates, exercises, movement progress.

Then he pointed at one sentence I had written only days earlier:

“Patient stood for 4 seconds unassisted.”

His voice lowered.

“If my uncle discovers I can stand again before we have proof of what they did… we’re dead.”

The word hit like ice water.

Dead.

Not fired.

Not punished.

Dead.

Because now I finally understood the truth:

The accident may not have been an accident at all.

That night, Alexander told me everything.

Three years earlier, the DeLucas had been preparing to officially announce Alexander as heir to the family company.

His father was retiring.

The board loved Alexander.

Investors trusted him.

But Victor DeLuca — charming in public, vicious in private — would lose everything once Alexander took control.

Then came the crash.

Rainy highway.

Brake failure.

Car flipped three times into a ravine.

Alexander survived.

Barely.

His father didn’t.

And within weeks, Victor became acting CEO.

The official story blamed weather.

But Alexander’s voice trembled when he confessed something he had never told anyone else.

“Right before the crash,” he whispered, “my father kept yelling at someone on the phone.”

“Who?”

Alexander looked at me.

“My uncle.”

Silence swallowed the room.

Then he revealed the worst part.

“I remember my father screaming one sentence before we hit the guardrail.”

His hands clenched violently on the wheelchair.

“He said: ‘You’ll never touch my son’s company.’”

My skin turned cold.

Suddenly the mansion around us no longer felt luxurious.

It felt rotten.

Dangerous.

Like every chandelier hid a secret.

The next morning, everything changed again.

Mrs. Isabella DeLuca summoned me to the dining hall.

Twenty feet of marble table.

Fresh white roses.

And every DeLuca family member staring at me in silence.

Victor sat at the head like a king.

Smiling.

“Maria,” Isabella said sweetly, “we’ve heard wonderful things about your dedication to Alexander.”

My pulse spiked instantly.

This was a trap.

Victor leaned back calmly.

“You’ve become very… important to my nephew.”

“I’m only doing my job, sir.”

His smile widened slightly.

Then he slid an envelope across the table toward me.

Inside was cash.

Stacks of it.

More money than my parents made in months.

“We’d like to reward loyal employees,” Victor said softly.

I looked up slowly.

“And if I refuse?”

The entire table went silent.

Victor’s eyes darkened just slightly.

Then he spoke words that made my blood run cold.

“Girls from poor neighborhoods disappear in Los Angeles every day, Maria.”

Alexander exploded.

“DON’T YOU DARE THREATEN HER!”

Every head turned toward him.

Because for the first time in three years…

Alexander DeLuca was standing.

Shaking.

Unsteady.

But standing.

The glass in Isabella’s hand shattered against the floor.

Victor’s face lost all color.

And in that single moment…

The entire DeLuca empire began to crack.

—

Phần 3:

Nobody moved.

Nobody breathed.

Alexander stood gripping the edge of the marble table, legs trembling violently beneath him.

But he was standing.

After three years in that wheelchair…

He was standing.

Mrs. DeLuca burst into tears instantly.

“Oh my God…”

But Victor recovered first.

Men like him always did.

His expression hardened almost immediately as his eyes locked onto Alexander’s legs.

Then onto me.

And suddenly I knew exactly what he was thinking:

She helped him recover.

Which meant…

I was now a threat.

Victor rose slowly from his chair.

“This is incredible,” he said calmly, though rage flickered beneath his smile. “Why don’t we call the family doctor immediately?”

Alexander’s voice cut through the room like a knife.

“No.”

The word shocked everyone.

Alexander straightened slightly despite the pain ripping across his face.

“You’re never bringing that doctor near me again.”

Silence.

Victor’s jaw tightened.

“You don’t know what you’re saying.”

“No,” Alexander replied coldly. “I finally know exactly what I’m saying.”

Then he reached into his jacket and threw the medical file onto the dining table.

The hidden diagnosis.

The bribery payments.

The proof.

Mrs. DeLuca gasped as she flipped through the pages.

Victor didn’t even touch them.

That told me everything.

Alexander’s voice shook with fury.

“You stole three years of my life.”

“Careful,” Victor warned softly.

“No,” Alexander snapped. “You be careful.”

Then came the moment none of us expected.

Mrs. DeLuca suddenly looked at Victor with horror spreading across her face.

“You told me his condition was permanent…”

Victor said nothing.

Her breathing became uneven.

“You told me there was no hope.”

Still silence.

Then, slowly, Isabella DeLuca began backing away from her own brother-in-law like she was seeing a monster for the first time.

“What did you do?”

Victor finally lost patience.

“What I HAD to do!” he exploded. “Your husband was weak! Alexander was weak! This company would’ve collapsed under sentimental idiots!”

The room froze.

And just like that…

He confessed.

Years of lies shattered in seconds.

Victor stepped closer to Alexander, voice venomous now.

“You should’ve died in that car with your father.”

Mrs. DeLuca screamed.

Alexander lunged forward instinctively—

—and his legs gave out.

I caught him before he hit the floor.

At that exact moment, the mansion doors burst open.

Federal agents.

Police.

Men in dark suits flooding the house.

Because Alexander had secretly made one phone call earlier that morning.

To the FBI.

Turns out the DeLuca empire had been under investigation for months — fraud, offshore laundering, bribery.

Victor’s crimes went far beyond one “accident.”

Agents surrounded the table as Victor slowly realized his empire was collapsing in real time.

“You set me up,” he hissed at Alexander.

Alexander leaned against me, breathing hard, but smiling for the first time since I had met him.

“No,” he said quietly.

“You did that yourself.”

As agents dragged Victor away in handcuffs, the entire mansion erupted into chaos.

Servants crying.

Lawyers arriving.

Reporters gathering outside the gates.

But in the middle of all that madness…

Alexander looked down at me.

At the poor maid from East Los Angeles carrying bruised dreams in a plastic grocery bag.

“You saved my life,” he whispered.

Tears filled my eyes.

“No,” I replied softly.

“You saved mine first.”

Six years later, I walked across a university graduation stage holding a teaching degree with honors.

And sitting proudly in the front row beside Alexander DeLuca…

was a little girl with my eyes and his smile.

Proof that sometimes the people the world calls powerless…

end up rewriting everything.
