PART 2 — THE MESSAGE I WAS NEVER SUPPOSED TO SEE

The message on Jack’s phone was only a few lines long.

But those few lines changed everything I thought I knew.

I hadn’t been trying to look through his phone. I swear I wasn’t.

That night, we were sitting on the couch, pretending to be exhausted from another fake argument we had staged for his mother earlier that evening.

For two weeks, we had been acting like our marriage was collapsing.

We barely spoke during Sunday dinners.

Jack had started arriving separately.

I had stopped bringing my apple pies.

His mother had watched every moment with a strange satisfaction she couldn’t hide.

She thought she was winning.

And honestly, I thought we were finally about to prove her wrong.

Jack had been so convincing.

He held my hand when we were alone.

He apologized for not seeing what his mother was doing sooner.

He told me over and over that he chose me.

That we were a team.

That we were going to let his mother reveal herself.

So when his phone lit up on the coffee table, I didn’t expect anything.

Until I saw the name.

Carol.

My stomach tightened.

I tried to ignore it.

I really did.

But then the preview appeared.

“Are we still meeting tomorrow? I need to know what you told her.”

My heart stopped.

I looked at Jack.

He was standing in the kitchen pouring water, completely unaware.

For a moment, my mind refused to accept what I was seeing.

Maybe there was another explanation.

Maybe Carol was talking about something else.

Maybe I was overreacting.

But then another message appeared.

“I don’t like lying to her anymore. She’s starting to suspect something.”

My hands went cold.

I stared at the screen until the words blurred.

Jack walked back into the room.

He immediately noticed my expression.

“What happened?”

I slowly turned the phone toward him.

He froze.

Not because he was confused.

Because he knew exactly what I had seen.

The silence that followed was worse than any confession.

“Explain,” I whispered.

Jack opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

“Explain why Carol is asking what you told me.”

He sat down slowly.

“Honey…”

“Don’t call me that.”

The hurt in my own voice surprised me.

Because I wasn’t angry anymore.

I was devastated.

The person I thought was standing beside me had suddenly become the person I was afraid of.

Jack rubbed his face.

“It’s not what you think.”

I laughed.

A quiet, broken laugh.

“That’s exactly what people say when it’s exactly what it looks like.”

He looked away.

And that was the moment I knew.

Something was wrong.

“Were you involved with her?”

“No.”

His answer came too quickly.

I stared at him.

“Then why does she talk like she knows about our marriage?”

Jack stayed silent.

Finally, he said something I never expected.

“My mother wasn’t the only one planning something.”

I felt my chest tighten.

“What does that mean?”

He looked at the floor.

“Carol has been trying to get closer to me for months.”

I shook my head.

“But your mother was pushing her toward you.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Jack swallowed.

“Because my mother thinks Carol would be a better wife.”

I already knew that.

I had heard it myself.

But then he said something that made everything more confusing.

“My mother doesn’t know the truth about Carol.”

“What truth?”

Jack stood up and walked toward the kitchen counter.

For a few seconds, he just stared outside.

Then he finally spoke.

“Carol and my mother have known each other for years. Before I met you, Carol was always around. My mother always wanted us together.”

I nodded slowly.

“Because she wanted her as your wife.”

“Yes.”

“Then why did Carol say she was tired of lying?”

Jack looked at me.

And for the first time that night, he looked scared.

“Because she knows something about my mother.”

I didn’t understand.

“What?”

Jack hesitated.

Then he reached for his phone.

“I was going to tell you tomorrow.”

“Tell me now.”

He unlocked the phone and opened his messages.

There were dozens.

Between him and Carol.

But not the kind I expected.

No flirting.

No secret romance.

Instead, they were conversations about my mother-in-law.

About her behavior.

About things she had said.

About strange comments she had made.

I looked through them carefully.

Then I found one message from Carol.

“I can’t keep helping you pretend anymore. She’s your mother, but what she’s doing to your wife is cruel.”

I looked up.

“Helping you pretend?”

Jack sighed.

“Yes.”

My head started spinning.

“What exactly have you been pretending?”

He sat across from me.

“Before you came back inside that night and heard my mother talking, I already knew.”

“Knew what?”

“That she wanted me to leave you.”

I stared at him.

“Then why didn’t you tell me?”

“Because I wanted proof.”

I shook my head.

“No. You wanted to handle it yourself.”

He looked guilty because he knew I was right.

“I thought I could protect you.”

“You made me walk into that house every Sunday and smile at a woman who hated me.”

His face dropped.

“I know.”

“No, Jack. You don’t know.”

My voice cracked.

“I baked her pies. I defended her when people complained about her. I thought she was lonely after losing your father.”

I wiped my eyes.

“And all this time, she was sitting there hoping my marriage would end.”

Jack reached for my hand.

I pulled away.

Not because I didn’t love him.

Because I was hurt.

“Why did Carol say she doesn’t like lying anymore?”

Jack was quiet for a long time.

Then he said:

“Because tomorrow wasn’t supposed to be about exposing my mother.”

I frowned.

“What?”

He looked at me.

“The plan changed.”

“What plan?”

Jack took a deep breath.

“Carol was never the woman my mother wanted me to leave you for.”

My heart started racing.

“Then who was?”

He didn’t answer immediately.

Instead, he opened another message.

One I hadn’t seen.

One from his mother.

The date was from three months earlier.

And the words on the screen made my entire body go numb.

“I don’t care what you have to do. Just make sure she leaves before she finds out about the money.”

I looked at Jack.

“What money?”

He didn’t speak.

And that scared me more than anything.

Because suddenly, this wasn’t about jealousy.

It wasn’t about Carol.

It wasn’t even about my marriage.

There was something bigger happening.

Something my husband had been hiding from me.

“Jack,” I whispered.

“What money?”

He looked at me with tears in his eyes.

And then he said the one sentence I never thought I would hear from him.

“The money your father left you was never as safe as you thought.”

I felt the room go completely silent.

Because I suddenly realized my mother-in-law wasn’t trying to destroy our marriage.

She was trying to get me out of the way.
