PART 2 — The Recording That Destroyed Every Lie They Built

I did not sleep that night.

After putting Ethan, Sophie, and Lucas to bed, I sat alone at my kitchen table with my laptop open and my phone charging beside me.

The apartment was quiet except for the hum of the refrigerator.

My finger hovered over one audio file.

Hospital_Call_Backup.mp3

Five years.

I had listened to it only twice in all that time.

Once the day I recovered it.

Once the day I finally accepted that Sebastian had chosen to abandon us.

I closed my eyes and pressed play.

A woman’s voice came first.

Olivia.

Cold.

Calm.

Completely certain no one would ever hear her.

“Sebastian doesn’t need more stress right now.”

A nurse answered.

“Ma’am, Ms. Hannah Brooks specifically requested that her husband be informed immediately. She’s had an emergency delivery.”

“I’ll handle it.”

“Can you confirm you’re authorized?”

“I’m his fiancée.”

There was a pause.

Then Olivia laughed softly.

“Actually… don’t transfer any more calls from her.”

Static crackled.

Then another sentence.

“If Sebastian finds out she delivered healthy babies, everything we’ve worked for disappears.”

The recording ended.

Every time I heard those words, they hurt less.

Not because they became easier.

Because they reminded me I had not imagined the betrayal.

Someone had deliberately stolen five years from my children.

The next morning my attorney, Rebecca Lawson, arrived at my office before eight.

She listened to the recording without interrupting.

When it finished, she removed her glasses.

“Have you ever played this for Sebastian?”

I shook my head.

“No.”

“Why?”

“I wanted him to live with the same silence he forced on us.”

Rebecca leaned back.

“I understand.”

She paused.

“But this isn’t only about him anymore.”

“It’s about three children whose entire legal history was manipulated.”

She slid a folder toward me.

“I already requested copies of the old probate filings.”

Inside were documents from the Carter family attorneys.

One page immediately caught my attention.

Declaration of Pregnancy Loss.

Signed by Sebastian’s mother.

Not by a doctor.

Not by a hospital.

Simply by Evelyn Carter.

Attached beneath it…

A statement claiming I had “voluntarily disappeared and declined further contact.”

I almost laughed.

“They forged an entire history.”

Rebecca nodded slowly.

“And someone is going to answer for it.”

Meanwhile…

Across downtown Chicago…

Sebastian was discovering that his perfect life had been built on fiction.

He stood inside Carter Global’s executive office staring at Olivia.

“I want every email Hannah ever sent me.”

Olivia forced a smile.

“I don’t know what you’re talking about.”

“My IT department does.”

She blinked.

“What?”

“I asked them to recover deleted accounts.”

Her confidence cracked.

“They can’t recover emails from five years ago.”

“They already did.”

He placed several printed pages onto his desk.

Unread messages.

Every one of them.

Sebastian… the babies are coming early.

Please answer. I’m scared.

Our sons and daughter need you.

Please don’t believe anyone else.

There were eleven emails.

Three hospital updates.

Four ultrasound photos.

And a scanned handwritten letter.

All unopened.

All automatically redirected into a hidden folder that no ordinary user would ever notice.

Sebastian looked at Olivia.

“You had access to my accounts.”

She remained silent.

“My mother gave you the passwords.”

Still silence.

Finally she whispered,

“I was protecting us.”

His face hardened.

“There was never an ‘us.’”

By noon every major shareholder meeting had been canceled.

Rumors spread through Carter Global headquarters.

No one knew why the CEO had locked himself inside his office.

Only that several board members had heard shouting.

At one o’clock…

Sebastian walked into his mother’s penthouse.

Evelyn Carter was arranging flowers.

She smiled.

“I wasn’t expecting—”

He dropped the stack of documents onto her marble dining table.

The smile disappeared.

“What are these?”

“You tell me.”

She flipped through the pages.

Her expression barely changed.

“You found the emails.”

“You told me Hannah lost the babies.”

“I told you what you needed to hear.”

His breathing became uneven.

“They were alive.”

“Yes.”

“For five years.”

“Yes.”

“And you knew.”

She calmly placed the papers down.

“They would have ruined your future.”

“My future?”

“You were preparing to become CEO.”

“You couldn’t be distracted by a difficult pregnancy and three premature infants.”

Sebastian stared at the woman who had raised him.

“I searched hospitals.”

“I hired investigators.”

“I mourned my family.”

“You mourned what I told you to mourn.”

His voice broke.

“You let me believe my children died.”

“They were better off without this family.”

The room became impossibly quiet.

Then Evelyn added the sentence that finally destroyed whatever remained between mother and son.

“If Hannah had loved you enough… she would have fought harder.”

Sebastian walked away before he realized his hands were shaking.

Late that afternoon…

A black SUV stopped outside Little Harvest Kitchen.

My employees exchanged nervous looks through the front windows.

Sebastian stepped out alone.

No security.

No assistants.

No expensive confidence.

Just one exhausted father who suddenly understood he had missed the first five years of his children’s lives.

Rebecca stood beside me.

“Your decision.”

I nodded.

“Five minutes.”

Nothing more.

Sebastian entered quietly.

The children were in the back classroom decorating cookies after school.

He heard laughter.

Three familiar little voices.

He froze.

“I’ve never heard them laugh before,” he whispered.

“You’ve heard them,” I answered.

“You simply weren’t there.”

He lowered his head.

“I know.”

For the first time since I had ever met him…

Sebastian Carter cried.

Not dramatic tears.

Not theatrical apologies.

Just silent grief.

“I failed them.”

“You never even knew them.”

“I should have.”

“Yes.”

He looked up.

“I’ll spend the rest of my life making that right.”

Before I could answer…

A tiny voice echoed from the hallway.

“Mommy?”

Lucas peeked around the corner.

Sebastian instinctively smiled.

Lucas smiled back.

For one heartbreaking second…

Neither of them understood why the other felt strangely familiar.

Then Ethan appeared.

Followed by Sophie.

All three children stood together staring at the stranger.

Sebastian slowly knelt until he was at their eye level.

He didn’t reach toward them.

He didn’t call himself their father.

He simply whispered,

“Hi.”

Sophie studied him carefully.

“Are you the sad man from the restaurant?”

He nodded.

“Yes.”

She thought for several seconds before walking over and placing a paper napkin into his hand.

“My teacher says people cry because their hearts hurt.”

Sebastian closed his fingers around the tiny napkin.

“They’re right.”

Before another word could be spoken…

The front door slammed open so hard the glass rattled.

Olivia burst inside surrounded by two attorneys.

Behind her…

Evelyn Carter entered with absolute confidence.

Olivia pointed directly at the children.

“They are members of the Carter family.”

“Our lawyers are filing for immediate emergency custody.”

Rebecca slowly smiled.

Then she lifted her own folder onto the table.

“Excellent.”

“Because I was just about to submit evidence of fraud… obstruction of parental communication… identity falsification… and conspiracy.”

She pressed the play button on a portable speaker.

Olivia’s voice filled the entire bakery.

“If Sebastian finds out she delivered healthy babies, everything we’ve worked for disappears.”

The color drained from Olivia’s face.

Evelyn’s composure vanished for the very first time.

And outside…

Three Chicago police detectives stepped through the front door, each carrying a warrant with the Carter family name printed across the top.
