Part 2 — The Shock

Ethan stood frozen in the middle of the empty living room, the folder trembling in his hands.

His mother’s voice broke the silence first.

“Ethan… where is all the furniture? Where are Claire’s things?”

Lily walked into the kitchen, her heels clicking on the bare marble floor. She picked up the paperweight and flipped through the documents. Her face turned white.

“These are bank records,” she whispered. “You took money from her account? Before we even moved in?”

Ethan didn’t answer. He was still staring at my handwritten note.

You said this house belongs to you. Now it does.

His phone started ringing. It was his lawyer.

I watched everything through the security cameras I had deliberately left connected.

Ethan answered on speaker.

“What the hell is going on?” he shouted. “Claire emptied the entire house!”

The lawyer’s voice was grim.

“Mr. Reed, I just received notice from Claire’s attorney. She’s filed for divorce and filed a motion to reclaim all assets purchased with proceeds from her company sale. The house is solely in her name. You have no legal claim to it.”

Ethan laughed bitterly, the sound echoing in the empty space.

“That’s impossible. We’re married—”

“Prenup or not, the house was bought with her separate funds before any joint accounts were truly mixed. She also has evidence of unauthorized transfers totaling nearly eighty thousand dollars. This is going to get ugly.”

Ethan’s mother sat down on the bare floor, looking dazed.

Lily’s voice turned sharp. “You told us she agreed to this! You said the house was ours now!”

Ethan hung up the phone and threw it across the room. It shattered against the wall.
