THE WOMAN IN MY BED WAS NOT A STRANGER

PART 2 — THE WOMAN IN MY BED WAS NOT A STRANGER

I stood there frozen in the doorway, unable to move, unable to understand what my eyes were seeing.

For four months, I had imagined this moment.

I imagined my husband, Daniel, opening the door with a surprised smile. I imagined my son, Ethan, running toward me, complaining that I had been away too long. I imagined the three of us sitting around the table while I cooked the meal I had carried home in my bag.

I had pictured laughter.

I had pictured warmth.

I had pictured home.

But the scene in front of me felt like I had walked into someone else’s life.

The woman sitting on the edge of my bed slowly turned her head.

She looked just as shocked as I was.

For a few seconds, none of us spoke.

Then she pulled the blanket closer around herself and whispered,

“Who are you?”

The question hit me harder than anything else could have.

Who was I?

I almost laughed.

I was the woman whose name was on the apartment contract.

I was the woman who had spent twenty-eight years building this family.

I was the woman who had left everything behind for four months because Daniel said he needed my support for his company project.

I was the woman who had spent nights alone in hotel rooms, staring at pictures of my husband and son on my phone, convincing myself that distance was temporary.

I was their wife.

Their mother.

Their home.

But standing there, I felt like a stranger.

Before I could answer, a familiar voice came from behind me.

“Clara?”

My body went cold.

I slowly turned around.

Daniel was standing in the hallway.

He was wearing a simple gray shirt, his hair messy like he had just woken up.

For a moment, my heart did something foolish.

It hoped.

It searched his face for an explanation.

A misunderstanding.

Anything.

But Daniel didn’t run toward me.

He didn’t ask if I was okay.

He didn’t even look surprised for more than a second.

His expression changed into something I had never seen before.

Fear.

Not fear because he had lost me.

Fear because his secret had been discovered.

“Clara…” he said quietly.

I stared at him.

“Who is she?”

My voice sounded strange even to me.

Calm.

Too calm.

Daniel opened his mouth, but no words came out.

The woman stood up quickly.

“Daniel, you didn’t tell me she was coming back today.”

That sentence destroyed the last piece of hope I had.

Not because she knew his name.

Not because she was in my bedroom.

But because she spoke like someone who belonged there.

Like someone who had been there before.

Like someone who had a place in my husband’s life.

I looked at Daniel.

“How long?”

He looked away.

That was when I knew.

A person who has nothing to hide looks straight at you.

Daniel couldn’t.

“How long has she been here?” I repeated.

“Clara, please—”

“How long?”

My voice rose.

The woman looked uncomfortable.

She grabbed her purse from the chair beside the bed.

“I think I should leave.”

I almost smiled.

Leave.

That word sounded so simple.

As if she was just a guest who had stayed too long.

As if she hadn’t been sleeping where I slept.

As if she hadn’t been standing in the middle of my marriage.

Daniel stepped toward her.

“No, wait.”

That was the moment something inside me broke.

Not when I saw them.

Not when I found the shoes.

Not even when I realized they had been together.

It was when he tried to stop her from leaving.

He was worried about her.

Not me.

I nodded slowly.

“I understand now.”

Daniel turned toward me.

“Clara, it’s not what you think.”

I looked around the bedroom.

The room where we had celebrated anniversaries.

The room where we held Ethan as a newborn.

The room where Daniel promised me, twenty-nine years ago, that he would never hurt me.

“Then tell me what I should think.”

He stayed silent.

I waited.

One second.

Five seconds.

Ten seconds.

Nothing.

The woman finally spoke.

“Daniel told me your marriage was already over.”

I looked at her.

“Excuse me?”

She lowered her eyes.

“He said you were only staying together because of your son. He said you hadn’t loved each other for years.”

My chest tightened.

I turned back to Daniel.

“Is that what you told her?”

Daniel rubbed his face.

“Clara…”

“No.”

I raised my hand.

“Answer me.”

He sighed.

“You were always gone. You cared more about work than us.”

I stared at him in disbelief.

Work?

The same work I did to help pay for this apartment?

The same work that allowed him to quit his job three years ago when his business failed?

The same work that paid for Ethan’s university?

I felt tears burning my eyes.

“You told her I abandoned you?”

Daniel looked uncomfortable.

“I was lonely.”

I laughed.

A quiet, broken laugh.

“Lonely?”

I pointed at the bags sitting on the kitchen table.

“Do you know what’s inside those?”

Neither of them answered.

“Food.”

My voice cracked.

“Your favorite food. Ethan’s favorite dishes. I spent two hours at the market this morning because I wanted to surprise you.”

Daniel looked at the bags.

For the first time, guilt appeared on his face.

But it wasn’t enough.

Not anymore.

I walked to the kitchen and picked up my phone.

Daniel immediately became nervous.

“What are you doing?”

I looked at him.

“Calling Ethan.”

His face changed.

“Clara, don’t involve him.”

I stared at him.

“You already did.”

Because somewhere in those four months, while I was away believing I still had a family waiting for me…

My husband had already created a new one.

I dialed my son’s number.

The phone rang.

Once.

Twice.

Three times.

Then he answered.

“Mom?”

The sound of Ethan’s voice almost made me cry.

“I’m home,” I whispered.

There was a long silence.

Then he said something that made my blood run cold.

“Mom… you weren’t supposed to come back yet.”

I froze.

“What do you mean?”

Another silence.

Then Ethan spoke softly.

“Dad said you knew.”

My hand tightened around the phone.

“Knew what?”

On the other end, my son took a shaky breath.

And then he said the words that changed everything.

“Mom… Dad told me months ago that you were never coming back.”

I looked at Daniel.

He was standing there, pale.

And for the first time that morning, I realized the woman in my bedroom might not have been the biggest betrayal waiting for me.

Because my own son had been carrying a secret too.
