Let’s find the rule:

Check if the pattern is: number × (number – 1)

8 × 7 = 56

7 × 6 = 42

6 × 5 = 30

5 × 4 = 20

So the pattern is: n × (n – 1)

Now apply the same rule to 3:

3 × (3 – 1) = 3 × 2 = 6
